KILLED IN SICILY
PARENTS INFORMED
Second Lieutenant Robert E. Wetzel,
22, a paratrooper stationed in Sicily,
was killed there May 14, (1944), the
War Department has informed his parents,
Mr. and Mrs. Earl J. Wetzel, 1336 1st
Avenue. No details were learned.
A junior at Ohio State University when
he entered the service May 1, 1942, Lt.
Wetzel received his basic training at
Camp Wolters, Texas, and his commission
in February 1943 from the Officer
Candidate School at Fort Benning, Georgia.
Before going overseas last October, he was
assigned to the 11th Airborne Division at
Camp McCall, North Carolina. He joined
the paratroopers after arriving overseas.
Besides his parents, he is survived by a
sister, Miss Margaret Wetzel; and one
brother, Cadet Donald Wetzel, stationed
at Iowa State Teachers' College, Iowa.
Memorial services for Lt. Wetzel will be
held Sunday afternoon at Boulevard
Presbyterian Church. He was a member of
Phi Theta Fraternity.

held Saturday at 1:30 p.m. at the
graveside in Union Cemetery.
Lt. Wetzel, who enlisted May 1, 1942,
was killed May 14, 1944, in Sicily,
while serving with a paratrooper unit.
A member of Boulevard Presbyterian
Church, he was a graduate of North High
School and attended Ohio State University.
Also surviving are a brother, Donald
Wetzel; and a sister, Margaret Wetzel;
both at home, and his maternal Grandmother,
Mrs. Miriam Dean, of Columbus.
Friends may call at the P.E. Rutherford
Funeral Home.
