John and Mary BONNET WETZEL Hi John, A second cousin once removed to Roxy tested. He is a descendant of John Wesley Anderson, his father Isaac Anderson, and his parents Jonathan Anderson / Catherine Snook (the daughter of Mathias). His daughter who manages the test moved it to gedmatch. It's right on chromosome 8, 20.6 cM, and looks like it's fully encompassed by your match to Roxy there. Have you ever considered putting your data on gedmatch? It's a free site. The data processing is slow but a lot of people from ancestry and 23 and me are there. Also, Steve and Roxy match to a Carolyn Dimick who is a descendant of Mathias Snook through son John. That match is also on chromosome 8 although doesn't look like it overlaps yours. But you might share other segments with her. If you're interested, it's www.gedmatch.com . I believe for FTDNA users, both the autosomal and X-files need to be uploaded. Also, I've been meaning to ask about the Kielys and also Mark Edwin Wetzel. How to they relate to you? Roxy and Steve match quite strongly to them also. Hope you're doing well. But the actual common ancestor could be a generation or two back from him. Mary (Wetzel) Jones was the only child of the putative George Wetzel / Elizabeth Snook family group to live past 1880. The 1880 census lists parent birthplaces although sometimes people interpreted that as ethnicity when they were reporting. According to that census, her father was born in Prussia; mother in New Jersey. But she could have been referring to German heritage for her father's line. Or she could have meant her father did emigrate directly from Prussia. Re, her reporting of her mother's birthplace. I can't rule out that Mathias Snook and wife weren't in NJ before they moved to Allegany county, MD. Charlotte -----Original Message----- From: John C. And if that George above him in the census is his father, then I have to figure out how they would both have been born in Maryland, when their ancestors were in the Fort Henry aka Wheeling area, on down into Mannington and Martinsburg, WV. Interesting, that Martha Rice is also there (1850 Monongalia census). Otis Rice authored a book about Lewis Wetzel and Mary Ann Rice was my 1st cousin twice removed. I haven’t even begun to look into Martha’s family yet, but this census page is rich with information! The Snook lines may eventually connect but otherwise, I don't recognize those Snook names. http://trees.ancestry.com/tree/67093114/family/pedigree Here is a census from 1850 from Monongalia, Virginia (later WVA): Your Henry and your John (who I think are also my husband's and his aunt's family) are on the census (family 827). Note on the same page, there are many members of the Youst family. These are descendants of Mathias Snook's daughter Margaret who married Peter Youst. (in fact Margaret (Snook) Youst is also on that page, head of family 831). Note that Henry is from Maryland (the Snooks originated in Allegany, MD). And note George Whetzel, age 83, also from MD, is living next door to Henry and on same census page! https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.3.1/TH-267-11848-42880-50?cc=1401638 This is some of the info about Mathias Snook's family, note it specifically references Margaret (Snook) Youst of Monongalia county. I sourced it from Maurice E. Snook's research and summarized it for an ancestry post to attach to my husband's tree. The source for this information is from History and Genealogy of the John Snuke / Snoke / Snook Family of Frederick County, Maryland, written by Maurice E. Snook in 2009 and available from him as a PDF. It is also excerpted with some additional information at this link: http://genforum.genealogy.com/snook/messages/1307.html Maurice examined Mathias Snook's will, recorded in Allegany county in 29 Dec 1790, which listed the oldest son John and Mathias' wife Barbara and a relevant 1803 land patent. This is the relevant section on the children of Mathias Snook: "A. Matthias Snook of Allegany Co., MD The will of Matthias Snook, written 30Nov1790, probated in Allegany Co. 29Dec1790 (Liber A.,p.1; Note: record at MD Hall of Records, Annapolis, WK 871 is abstracted as follows: (spelling as it appears in the original) ...Give and bequeath to dearly beloved wife Barboah Snook all and singular with my beloved two friegs (friends) Samel Elitte and Joseph Woruok I appoint executors...and singler all my said and tenements to remain in my beloved wife's hand as long as she remains my widow and be equally divided between my beloved children... Although only one son is named in the above will, several land patents for the land of Matthias, name the rest of his children: (Patents of MD; 1803, Liber IC#Q, folio 173; at Maryland Hall of Records. "The following are entitled to one child's part of the real estate of Matthias Snook, consisting of Lots # 3742, 3743, 3744 lying in Allegany Co., payment for them having been received from Matthias who was a settler westward of Fort Cumberland:" (a) George Whetzel and wife Elizabeth, of Allegany Co., MD. (e) Henry Myer and wife Julia, of Allegany Co., MD. (f) Jonathan Anderson and wife Catherine, formerly of Allegany Co., MD, now of the State of Kentucky. All of the above sold their share of Matthias' land to Conrad Corbus for 20 pounds each. The patents read as follows: ...that there were laid out and surveyed pursuant to the Resolution of the General Assembly, posted at the April session 1787, amongst the lots westward of Ft. Cumberland, the following, lying in the county aforesaid and contiguous to each other, viz. #3742, 3743, 3744 each containing 50 acres. That the commissioners appoint, in virtue of an Act of Assembly, passed at Nov. session 1788, allotted and awarded the said lots to Matthias Snook as settler on and entitled to a preference in the purchase of the same. That the said Snook departed this life, leaving Catherine, intermarried with Jonathan Anderson; John Snook; Anna, intermarried with Conrad Corbus; Margaret, intermarried with Peter Youst; Elizabeth, intermarried with George Whetzell; William Snook; and Julia, intermarried with Henry Myer, his only children and by his will, duly made, devised that all his lands should remain in his wife Barbary Snook's hands as long as she should remain his widow and be equally divided between his children. ...Corbus petitions the court to grant him the patent." I realized I never linked the tree for Roxy and Steve, here it is. Go up through the Anderson line to get to the Snooks: http://trees.ancestry.com/tree/13708789/family?cfpid=-24729071 I need to track it down but there was a genforum posting with someone posting the purported children of George Wetzel and Elizabeth Snook. That's how I attached Henry's name to them. We don't even have ages for Elizabeth. However, the children seemed to be born between 1800 - 1820, suggesting she was born about 1780. eta - tracked it down. I think there are a few errors in who married who but still insightful. http://genforum.genealogy.com/wetzel/messages/1462.html Thanks so much for the Wetzel history. I need to spend a little time reading and digesting it. John & Mary BONNET WETZEL (I capitalize the last names of my direct ANCESTORS). He and Lewis (“Death Wind” by the Indians, never married) are the only ones in that family for whom I have no families of their own, and looking again for George on ancestry.com still reveals no wife/children. So this is a fascinating link indeed, especially coming from a DNA connection! Importance: High Dear Charlotte, I apologize, I just caught your email, while transitioning systems… This is very interesting. First of all, my upload on the FTDNA site had made some changes, mis-naming a few of my ancestors(!), and I believe this Christy was one of them. My father’s name is Edwin Paul Wetzel. My father’s father’s name was Christy Robert Wetzel. His father John Wetzel, married Mary Ellen Matthews (9 children) and Hannah Mercer (9 children)- 18 kids- What was he thinking?!?!?!. His father, Henry, the Henry who married Mary Ann Brookover (they had 7 children together)and also Rebecca Barker (one child, George- there are a lot of George Wetzels). His father was George. I’m attaching an ancestry report with a little more detail, just names at this point, and even it is 641 pages, going back 12 generations from me. [It’s almost 8 MB; I hope this does not cause reception issues on your end. I will send this note without the attachment, as well, just in case.] Details about Henry are one of my MAJOR genealogy/ancestry challenges. He is almost always confused with a minister of the same name (or are they one and the same? I really don’t think so) and this Henry… is YOUR Henry! So I’d love to know what you have about him. I’ll share what I know, starting with the ancestry report. I hope this will answer your questions, but if not, I hope we can collaborate, because we probably have some of the same issues with this generation. The only Snook I have in my tree is Mary Marguret (and I don’t have her parents, but I’ll search), who married Elbert Maynard Calkins; do you have her/them and is this correct?: Descendants of Mary Marguret Snook <image002.jpg> Generation 1 1. MARY MARGURET 1 SNOOK was born on 10 May 1900. She died on 31 Dec 1974. She married (1) ELBERT MAYNARD CALKINS. He was born on 26 Feb 1879. He died on 04 Jun 1933. Elbert Maynard Calkins and Mary Marguret Snook had the following children: i. ISABELLE MAUDE2 CALKINS was born on 15 Apr 1881. She died on 29 Apr 1965. ii. J ARTHUR CALKINS was born about 1901. He died about 1957. iii. PRIVATE. iv. PRIVATE. I’m so excited that you wrote! I am now going to go through your information and see if it adds any clarification. But I wanted to write first, to say- Thank you so much for sharing, John C. The match with Roxy is particularly strong with two long segments on chromosome 8. I believe the common ancestor is in your Wetzel line. Steve and Roxy are descendants of Mathias Snook and his wife Barbara. One of their daughters, Elizabeth Snook, married a George Wetzel. One of their sons may have been Henry Wetzel who married Mary Brookover and had a son John Wetzel born 1839. I believe that is the same as your tree except that you have Mary Brookover's husband as a Christy Wetzel. Is it possible that he was Henry Christy Wetzel? If so, I believe his mother would have been Elizabeth Snook who would have been sister to Catherine Snook (my husband and his aunt's line). The chromosome 8 match overlaps Richard Perry Yantis, with whom we have a more definitive Snook match (back to Mathias and Barbara). Best regards, Charlotte
