From Banco, West Virginia.
Graduated from Chapmanville High School (WV) in 1941.
Enlisted in the US Navy Reserves on November of 1942 under the V-5 Naval Aviation Cadet Program.
Joined the USS Makin Island (CVE-93) and VC-84 Squadron on January 1945.
Took part in the Iwo Jima and Okinawa campaigns flying a FM-2 Wildcat.
Edsel was awarded
the Distinguished Flying Cross,
Three Air Medals,
American Campaign Medal,
Asiatic & Pacific Campaign Medal,
World War II Victory Medal,
Philippine Presidential Unit Citation, and
the Philippine Liberation Medal.
Edsel was discharged from active duty on November 1945.

Edsel married Aleen Williamson after the war and raised 5 children. He continue to fly after WWII, flying for various coal companies and operating his own flight school in West Virginia. Edsel died in 1977 in a plane crash that he was piloting.
