The Hatfields Remanded to Pike County.
An Amusing Episode.
LOUISVILLE, KY., March 4.-In the United States District Court yesterday Judge Barr remanded the West Virginia prisoners, the Hatfields, to the charge of the Pike county officials. This is a victory for the State of Kentucky. An appeal to the United States Oircuit Court from District Judge Barr's opinion was taken by Hon. Eastace Gibson, attorney for the State of West Virginia. The case had a very amusing close. While the immediate disposition the prisoners was under consideration, Andrew Varney, one of their number, got up and stated that he wanted to be sent back to Pike county. The court there would only be in sesaion for a week, and he wanted to be there in time as he felt sure he would prove his innocence.
The Court said:
"If you had not made application for writ of habeas corpus you would be there now." Varney said: "It was not on my application that I was brought this here. I did not know a thing until I was brought here."
The Judge said he wished he had known that bofore. Varney said he did not think it was fair to make him and others suffer in order that West Virginia might dght her legal battle. This pat the laugh on the representative of West he Virginia, who, it will be remembered, when made the application for the writ, represented that the prisoners were in argat dangor in Pike county, and that before they were woot anxious to ba brought the United Staies Court in order to escape this danger.
