A CHILD OF A GUNSLINGER AND LAWMAN: Goldie Ethel Phillips Rayburn was the daughter of Frank "Bad Frank" Philips (1861-1898) and Nancy McCoy Hatfield Phillips (1865-1901) of Pike County, Kentucky.
During the feud-era, Bad Frank, a man who claimed to have once road with outlaw Jesse James and the James Gang, was a Kentucky deputy marshall and the sworn enemy of the feudin' Hatfields.
Goldie's siblings included Elsie Phillips Ford (1889-1952); Jesse James Phillips (1892-1985); Roy Phillips (1896-1970); and Flora Phillips Pickup (1894-1993).
Goldie's half-siblings - being the children of Johnse Hatfield and Nancy McCoy Hatfield - included William Anderson "Ansie" Hatfield (1884-1917); and Stella Hatfield (1886-1900). And another half sibling was Frank Phillips Jr., the son of Bad Frank and Mary Frances Rowe Phillips Justice (1863-1953).
Goldie's husband was Fred Rayburn (1895-1983).

Jesse James Phillips used to fuss at me for working Sundays at the Piggly Wiggly when I was a teenager. After I few times, I grew tired of it and pointed out that if he didn’t shop, I wouldn’t have to work.
He was flummoxed.
I found out many years later that we were related through the McCoys. My great grandmother and his mother were cousins-first cousins if I remember correctly.

Sad those kids had that stigma attached to them. The areas were so small everyone knew who and what their father. I’m sure some people were less than kind.

My mother told me that her father worked on the King ranch in his youth, and that he once rode a train with Frank James

I sure I'm related to these somehow as Frank Phillips is my great great grandfather on my dad's side , & his kin is from Frank & his first wife before the feud & his part , I have the family tree history & some copies of old newspaper clippings , makes for some interesting reading

Another thing let's get this straight so-called bad Frank Phillips who was only bad when he had a bunch of Kentucky farm Yankees around him no more road with Frank and Jesse James than I did. The only so-called proof are family accounts in other words stories that he told with a jug of whiskey as they were passing it around. Just a bunch of bs. He was nothing but a punk.

Do you know of any of these Phillips siblings stayed in the area or move elsewhere?
The cemetery Frank is buried at Phelps is in Phillips Branch, do you know if this is coincidence or was it named after he or maybe his family?

Bad Frank huh? Anything bad about him was his smell. He was real bad when he had about 20 Hired Guns paid for by the state of Kentucky behind him Kentucky yankees. But he got his come up and too bad it didn't happen sooner

Doc Patriot could I ask, the gravestone says she was born in 1902, but it looks like her father passed in 1898 and her mother passed in 1901?
