Former Resident Dies.
- from the Watkins Express. Both Mr & Mrs Hurd will be remembered by readers of the Enterprise. Mr. Hurd...

THURSDAY, DEC. 27, 1928.
... was editor of the Genesee Times years ago. The article follows:
Edna L. Hurd, well known in Schuyler and Finger Lakes counties in business and especially for her charitable work, died at her summer residence at Rock Stream, December 5th.
Death came very suddenly and unexpectedly after septaemia developed from what was first thought to be only an ordinary case of jaundice.
The deceased was for many years associated with her husband in business in Chicago, Buffalo and the Metropolitan district, residing in each of those cities for many years, where her acts of charity in caring for the sick and distressed were incessantly carried on. In 1922, both her husband's and her own private fortune were swept away in the great Fort Dearborn Bank failure and affiliated failures in Chicago. The deceased then came to Montour Falls and resided in her country home on West Hill until that also was voluntarily turned over to help pay others more needy than herself.
Impaired in health and worldly goods she carried on her business and charitable work from Rock Stream for the past two years, even dictating many letters for the comfort of others until she finally lapsed into unconsciousness.
In her early life she had taken a hospital training as a professional nurse, but only on two or three special occasions did she ever accept a penny of renumeration. "Send for Edna," was the first thing any of her many relatives and close friends would say when sickness overcame them and she was never known to turn down a call from relative, friend or even a stranger.
The deceased was a member of the Methodist Episcopal church and is survived by
- her husband, R. L. Hurd,
- one adopted daughter, Gene,
two sisters,
- Mrs. R. N. Erway of Montour Falls and
- Mrs. S. M. Seibert of East Aurora;
four brothers,
- Thos. Neefe of Cuba,
- Richard Neefe of Eldred, Pa., and
- her aged mother, Mayme Neefe and
- two brothers, Harry and Leigh of Coudersport, Pa.
Interment was in the family cemetery at Sweden Valley, Pa.
