MANY FRIENDS MOURN
-- Mother of Many Children, One a Soldier in France, Passes to Great Unknown---
Thursday morning in Friendship, NY, occurred the death of Mrs. Lydia Cook, wife of Andrew Cook. She was fifty-eight years of age on January 20th and most of her life had been spent in Potter county. A few months ago, with her husband she went to Troupsburg, NY and from there they had recently moved to Friendship. She was sick only about two weeks and was first stricken with "flu" which was followed by pneumonia.
She was the daughter of Charles Vergason of Sweden and the aged father survives her, also her husband and ten children.
- Mrs. Myrtle Tauscher who lives in Northland, Michigan;
- Fred Mitchell, of Genesee;
- George Mitchell of Brocton, Mass;
- Mahlon Mitchell of Turtle Point, Pa;
- Carl and Harry of Coudersport;
- Cora, wife of Ora Schaffer, of New Millport, Pa;
- Maude, wife of Frank Gilbert of Elmira and
- Miss Nettie Mitchell of Burtville and
- Clyde, who is with the American Expeditionary Forces in France.
Just before her death Mrs. Cook received a present of $20.00 from her soldier son and although he did not even know of her illness, this money was used to buy her burial clothes.
All her children were with her when the end came except Clyde and Mrs. Tauscher.
Mrs. Fred Mitchell, her daughter-in-law, spent nearly all of the time of her mother-in-law's illness with her and gave her every possible care.
The body was brought to Coudersport and on Saturday there was a brief prayer service by Reverend J.E. Balmer at the undertaking rooms of G.H. Grabe and Son and the burial was made in the family plot in the Sweden cemetery.
