Orange William Hall
Melbourne
Retired Air Force Lt. Col. Orange W. (Bill) Hall, 89 years of age, died Friday night, October 2, 2009 in his sleep at Wuesthoff Progressive Care Center. Dr. Hall was born and raised in Coudersport, PA. He graduated from Penn State on a scholarship prior to becoming a flying cadet in the Army Air Corp in 1940.
During World War II, he was awarded the Air Medal with seven oak leaf clusters, the last one being connected with the search and rescue of a PBY-5A crew which had over shot their destinations in the Galapagos Islands and landed in the Pacific Ocean when their fuel was exhausted. Dr. Hall also flew B-24 Liberators.
Dr. Hall retired from the Air Force in 1962 and returned to school to earn -his Ph D at the University of Florida. He then served in the University systems as he accepted a position in Savannah, Georgia as Head of the newly formed Business Dept. at Armstrong State College, now known as Armstrong Atlantic University. He served as Dept. Head and Professor; he retired in 1982 after serving fifteen years with the University of Georgia.
Dr. Hall and his wife, Marge retired a second time in Brevard County in 1989. They were among the first to move to the new Indian River Colony Club, a military retirement community. Marge and Bill have since relocated to the second phase on the community, Wuesthoff Hospital's assisted living:
Dr. Hall is also survived by their two daughters,
Sally Homes of Alachua, FL and
Mrs. Dawn Hall Lewis of Savannah, GA,
as well as several grandchildren and great grandchildren.
A private memorial service is to be held in Melbourne.
