WILLIAM PHEPS
DIES AT HOME HERE

Well Known Man, III Several Months, Succumbs After Great Suffering.
William E. Phelps, known to his worlds of friends as Bill Phelps, passed away at the family home on Mill street at 7:25 last evening. Mr. Phelps retired from active business about a year ago selling his garage on West Second street to W. A Harris. About October 1 he suffered a stroke of paralysis and since that time he had been confined to his home with the exception of a few times he was able to ride out. For the last week he had suffered greatly and death came as a relief from his earthly troubles. He was given the tenderest care but neither care nor medical skill could avail.
William E. Phelps was a son of Frank and Amelia (Nelson) Phelps born at Ladona, January 3, 1870. During his young manhood he was engaged in lumbering and with the exception of a few years he was located at Emporium, his entire life was spent in this vicinity. Some years ago he erected the building that is now the Potter County Garage and later he purchased the garage property opposite the Enterprise office.
Bill was a big hearted big man whose friends were all who knew him and his death is sincerely mourned.
Surviving him is his widow and two step-daughters,
- Mrs. Charles Heinemeyer of Newark, N. J., and
- Mrs. Joseph Haskins of Coudersport,
- also one sister, Mrs. W. W. Toombs of Olean.
Funeral services will be held from the Park M. E. Church tomorrow afternoon at 2:00 o'clock.
- Interment will be in Eulalia Cemetery.

Chris, you are correct. I remember hearing it called the Phelps Garage, and that would have been long after the original owner died. At one time, it was called the Potter County Garage. (I have the impression that John Rigas paid to have the structure demolished. By that time it was an eyesore.)
Attached is the obituary of
- William E. Phelps (1871-1928).
- His widow is Matilda A. Tuttle (1873-1937).
- Her sister Rebecca L. Tuttle (1884-1948) was married to my grand uncle Fredrick M. “Fred” Mitchell (1880-1940).

The building in the background on the right is the old Potter County Garage which I believe was a Texaco station. It's long gone and now the site is just a vacant lot.
