The Quakers were members of a faith called the Society of Friends. Their religious beliefs were very different from the Anglicans, Pilgrims, and Puritans. Their faith was centered on a "God of Love and Light." They believed that the ultimate spiritual authority was "the inner light" which was in every man and woman. Traditionally, they met in simple meeting houses rather than ornate churches to sit together in silent contemplation of "the inner light" without a formal preacher, without liturgy and without music.
_______
Quakers contributions to social developments in American history were disproportionately large. They were passionately committed to equality. This was reflected in the role of women in their communities, their acceptance of other persecuted religious communities, their good relations with American Indians and their leadership in the anti-slavery movement.
______
Quakers opposed all war and would not support the military. They also refused to take oaths and pay taxes that supported war. These radical beliefs led to them suffering persecution in both England and America. The ruling Anglicans in England imprisoned Quakers. In Virginia, they banished them. The Puritans of Massachusetts banished Quakers, and, in some cases, executed them in public hangings. William Penn created Pennsylvania as a "Holy Experiment" where Quakers and other religious minorities could freely practice their religious convictions.

Madheather98 Hey Cousins. I too am happy to find out about my Quaker roots. I'm especially grateful to understand why I have an innate trait for freedom and equality ! I guess you can say it is in the genes. It also explains why I always feel like I am related to practically everyone I meet. If you have a chance to do the dna test you may be surprised by how many people you are related to. I found a lot of 95% matches to people I have never met. Anyway, may the light of love be with you all
