I have been enhancing photos for the last few days with some great success. I have attached an example showing three versions of a photo I posted in November 2019: Cynthia Maria Strong and four sons with William Clark McCann. (1.) Original provided by Sepulveda. (2.) Enhanced. (3.) Enhanced and colorized.
The new app is available at myheritage.com. (Click on TRY IT NOW. Then click on UPLOAD PHOTOS.) The user interface seems a little clunky. I used my typical trial-and-error approach (I don't need no stinking instructions). An overview and instructions are available at https://www.myheritage.com/photo-enhancer.
There is no software to download. To take advantage of the free trial, you do not have to provide a credit card number. You do not have to provide any information other than your e-mail address. MyHeritage offers other services, but you do not have to bother with those. (I think I had to start a family tree. So I entered me and my parents.)
Most important -- you can download your enhanced photo as a .jpg.
My success using the app ranges from none and barely perceptible to stunning. Most of my results are in the range of modest to big improvement. So far, I have not had any success with out-of-focus photos.
One of the strong points for the app is face enhancement. On a blurry photo, the face came out great, but the rest of the photo is still blurry. The improvement was good enough for a thumbnail.
Most of my photos are low resolution (about 100-300KB) and that seems to work well. In one case, a high-res (about 3MB) worked where a low-res version did not.
Enhancing and colorizing will increase your file size. (I use Microsoft Picture Manager for cropping, compressing and auto correcting.)
Because MyHeritage enhancing is controlled by a computer algorithm, the final result may not be 100% true. In most cases, I think, the result is truer than the unenhanced photo. In general, sharper photos will result in more accurate enhancement results.
One other nice feature. You can upload a .png file and download a .jpg -- effectively the app is a converter. I haven't tried other file formats yet.
