- Hear Second Talk On Life Of Potter County's Founder -

The speaker at the spring meeting cf the Potter County Historical Society, held Friday, April 24, was Robert R. Lyman. This was his second talk on the life history of Major Isaac Lyman, the founder of Potter County.

"Laura D. Pierce became the second wife of Major Isaac Lyman, when they were married, by his cousin, in the Congregational Church at Marlboro, Vt., on 9 February 1792. He sold all his property, gave up all his honors and positions in the state of Vermont, and migrated to a place, later called Bolton Landing, on the west shore of Lake George, N. Y. He built a large mansion on Mohican Point, which was, and is, the most beautiful spot in the most picturesque section of one of the world's grandest lakes. His home became known as Lyman Inn, and later as the Mohican House.

"Isaac and Laura had three children born at Bolton, who later made history in Potter County.
- Burrel, born 10 November 1792, was the first white child born in the Bolton area. He became the first settler at Roulette, Pa.
- Laura, born 20 Feb. 1794, became the first bride in Potter County, when she married Silas McCarty.
- Harry, born 17 Mar. 1798, became the first resident doctor in Potter County, after he graduated from a medical school in Philadelphia.

"About 1799 Isaac sold his home to his brother-in-law, Rodger Edgecomb, the father of Jonathan, who came to Potter County and built the famous Cherry Springs Hotel. Roger operated the 28 room house as a tavern. It became world famous and remained the best in town for over 100 years. A restored Lyman-Mohican House is still there, on a 37 acre lot, in the center of the town. Its history is recorded in a book which says: The Lyman-Mohican House is Bolton and Bolton is that house. Great are both.

"By 1800 Major Isaac Lyman was living at Hebron, N. Y., where he built and operated a water power sawmill, close to the Vermont line near West Paulet.

"On 18 June 1807, 15 years and seven babies after marriage, Isaac and Laura separated by mutual consent. Then he migrated with all his unmarried children to Delmar (Wellsboro), Tioga County, Pa. There he met John Keating who owned a vast area of land in north-central Pennsylvania. Isaac made an agreement with him to open up roads and organize Potter County for settlers.

"On 3 March 1809 Isaac married Patience Mann Spafford, who had separated from her husband, Bradford Spafford. Four of her children joined the Lyman family.

"During 1808 and 1809 Isaac built the East-West road (Route 6) through Potter County, and a log house for his family at a place later called Lymansville (Ladona). On 16 Mar. 1810 he moved to Pother County, to remain for the rest of his life.

"The census of 1810 listed only two families in all of Potter County. In Isaac's little cabin 22 persons were living:
- his own family,
- the Spafford children, and
- nine men to help with the hard work ahead in opening up and organizing a county for others who soon followed."

At a future meeting of the society Mr. Lyman will tell what the Major did in Potter County, and how he lost all his property supplying food to the early settlers to keep them from starving while they cleared their land.
