Valentine was the older brother of Devil Anse Hatfield, a justice of the peace in Logan County, and a partner in Devil Anse's timber business. Unlike the other Hatfield feudists, he voluntarily surrendered to Frank Phillips. He was subsequently tried and convicted of the murder of the three McCoy sons and sentenced to life imprisonment. He died in the Kentucky state penitentiary six months later and was buried in the prison cemetery which has since been paved over.
