William R. Wright

William R. Wright, son of Rufus L. and Mary Jane Wright, was born May 5, 1862 in Olean, New York and passed away December 15, 1937 in Grand Island, Nebraska at the age of 75 years, 7 months and 10 days. He spent most of his early life in the community in which he was born. On March 9, 1885 he was united in marriage to Flora J. Hills of Allegany, New York. In 1889 he, with his wife and one daughter, moved to Nebraska and located at Almeria in Loup county. In the spring of 1893 they moved to a farm seven miles southeast of Burwell and remained in that community until 1901 when they settled on the farm three miles southeast of Burwell where he made his home until his passing. He was preceded in death by his wife on July 22, 1925 and the eldest daughter Edna on July 30, 1920. Mr. Wright was always interested in every public enterprise and was among the first ones to work on the original irrigation ditch just south of Burwell, which was completed about 1900. He was vitally interested in the present irrigation projects, and his one ambition was that he might live to see water running in the new canals. He was one of the most progressive minded men in the community. Those who knew him best will remember his kindly disposition and will always cherish his friendly handclasp in greeting. He is survived by one son, Merritt L. Wright, one daughter, Mrs. Spencer Horner, two granddaughters Miss Doris Wright and Miss Betty Horner, and two grandsons, Billy Wright and Sterling Horner all of Burwell, besides his many many friends.
The funeral service was conducted in the Christian Church in Burwell by the minister, Rev. W. L. Goodell, Sunday, December 19, at 1:30 pm. Interment was beside his wife in the Ord Cemetery.
