St. Petersburg, Fla., Aug. 18 (AP). -Elmer Underwood, 87, a pioneer in development of news pictures and former co-owner of the internationally known New York photographers, Underwood & Underwood, died at his home here yesterday. Underwood was credited with introducing the first news pictures in 1897, a record of the Greco-Turkish war. He encountered opposition but finally persuaded the Illustrated London News to publish the war pictures. Underwood was born Oct. 9, 1859, in Fulton County, Ill., son of a Baptist clergyman. He entered the printing trade at 14, and in 1877 established his own printing firm in Kansas. Before coming to Florida, he made his home in Maple Springs, NY
