Biography

Elizabeth 'Lizzie' Mimi Bailey was born in 1870 in Auburn, NY, the daughter of John Newton Bailey and Sarah Esselstyn. Her father, a newspaper publisher, moved the family to Ann Arbor, MI in the late 1870s, and Elizabeth spent her formative years there. After graduating from the Ann Arbor high school in about 1888, she attended the University of Michigan. She married Frank W. Rane in 1893 in Windsor, Ontario, Canada and joined him in Morgantown, WV, where he was teaching at the University of West Virginia. In 1896, they moved to Durham, Vermont, where Frank taught at New Hampshire College. They had three children together during these years. In 1906, the family moved to Waban, MA on the outskirts of Boston, when Frank took up the position of State Forester. They started the Boston Gardening Company, which became a family business. In 1920 Frank got involved in land development in Palm Beach, FL, and he and Elizabeth began to share their time between Massachusetts and Florida. Her husband passed away in 1933. Elizabeth continued to help manage the family business, spending time in Boston with her son, daughter, and grandson, the future Hollywood actor Tony Perkins, but settling more in Palm Beach, often travelling including visits to Europe and Hawaii. She was called 'Mimi' by her family and friends. She passed away in 1958 in Palm Beach.

The relationship of John Bailey to his daughter Mimi has been associated with an autosomal dna segment (Chromosome 1: 190,325,645 to 203,909,013 of length 15.5 cM, 2,445 SNPs [GEDmatch analysis, 6 Nov 2015]) between Douglas Gary Anderson (GEDmatch kit M612162) and Thomas Fitz Randolph (GEDmatch kit M011134) that links back to Benjamin Cooley (1681-1745) and Margaret Bliss (1683-1744). This association remains to be confirmed through triangulation with a third person.
