Back in 1943 you could get a tonsillectomy in a doctor's office. This one didn't turn out very well.

• Young Woman Dies Suddenly in Physician's Office
Coroner's Report Exonerates Dr. C. E. Baxter of Blame in Death of Mrs. Elmer Woodworth.

At a coroner's investigation held in Port Allegany Sunday evening, Dr. C. E. Baxter was exonerated of blame in the death of Mrs. Elmer Woodworth, who died at 2:20 p.m. Sunday, on the operating table physician's office.
According to Coroner Philip R. Shaw, Mrs. Woodworth, who resided at 24 Woodlawn Avenue, Coudersport, went to the physician's office by appointment to undergo a local tonsillectomy.
After the anaesthetic had been injected, the patient complained of feeling faint. Two or three minutes later, she lost consciousness. Dr. Baxter called Dr. H. C. Mosch immediately. The two doctors administered heart and respiratory stimulants and applied artificial respiration futilely. After three-quarters of an hour, Dr. Mosch pronounced the young woman dead. The body was removed to the Gallup Funeral Home in Port Allegany. The investigation was set for 7:30 by Coroner Shaw. Others present Me were District Attorney Walter P. Wells, Sheriff John C. Chamberlin, Doctors A. F. Domaleski, H. C. Mosch and C. E. Baxter of Coudersport, and Doctors Leo Helman and A. J. Colcord of Port Allegany. The Port Allegany physicians represented the family of the dead girl, at the coroner's request. The autopsy was performed by Dr. Mosch, assisted by Dr. Domaleski. Pathalogical examination disclosed that death resulted from the action of the anaesthesia on an enlarged thymus, normally a small ductless gland which lies in the upper part of the thorax and lower part of the throat. According to physicians and Coroner Shaw, the gland disappears or becomes rudimentary in adults. In the case of Mrs. Woodworth, the autopsy physicians said, the gland was enlarged to the size of an adult's palm. The function of the gland is said to be uncertain; even less is known of the fatal consequences that oftentimes ensue when a patient with an enlarged thymus is anaesthetized. This is the third such case in Coudersport in three years. Mrs. Woodworth, who was employed in the Brownhil Company here, is survived by her widower, Elmer Woodworth, U.S. Army in Alabama, hers father, Nels Anderson, a sister, Signe, and a brother Carl, all of Port Allegany. Mr. and Mrs. Woodworth were married last March prior to his induction into the armed forces..

The 3rd such case of enlarged Thymus in 3 years in Coudersport? Wonder where the other 2 lived or if they all grew up in the same area.

Dr. Baxter took out our dad’s tonsils while Dad sat in a chair. There were some complications from that as well.

I heard of a young woman from Ulysses, where the same thing happened they could not stop the bleeding when they removed her tonsils, she was pregnant. I must have heard family members talking about it.
