Former City and County Official Dies at Home After Long Illness.
John Wetzel, a well-known early pioneer of Spokane, died Sunday morning at 12:30 o'clock at his home, 1208 Carlisle avenue, after an illness of more than a year.
About a year ago Mr. Wetzel was operated on for cancer of the stomach and for four months it was thought that he had been cured. A second attack caused him to be operated on again.
Coming to Spokane in 1889, just 22 years ago, from the little town of Newport, Kentucky, Mr. Wetzel accepted a position as assistant city engineer, a position which he held for 10 In 1898 he was elected to the years. office of county engineer, which he John Wetzel. held for four years. He was chairman of the board of public works under the Pratt administration and since has been a practicing engineer.
Was 51 Years Old.
Mr. Wetzel was born May 17, 1860, and was 51 years old the time of his death. He is survived by a widow, Mrs Nellie Wetzel, A son, Charles E. Wetzel; his mother, Mrs. Caroline Wetzel, and four brothers and one sister, all residing at Newport, Ky. He was an active member of the 1. 0. 0.F., Mt. Carleton lodge No. 103, and of the J. O. U.A. M. No. 17.
The funeral services will be conducted at the family residence Tuesday afternoon at 2 o'clock. Mayor Hindley will officiate. The Odd Fellows will take charge of the burial at the cemetery, Interment will be at Fairmount.
