•Gals douse chimney fire
ALMA-Three women firefighters, newly graduated from a fire training course, got a chance to use their skills Wednesday afternoon at a chimney fire on the Alma-Pikeville Road. Mrs. Robert Pinney, wife of the Alma fire chief, said the 3 p.m. alert caught many Alma firemen either going to or coming from shifts at Wellsville industries, leaving for a few moments only the women to respond. Despite the icy roads, the women drove to the scene in the Alma pumper, where they were joined by both Alma and Allentown firemen.
In addition to Mrs. Pinney, first at the fire were Marguerite Scoville and Joyce Gardner. The blaze was at the home of Lewis Winans. Fire charred roof rafters in the attic of the house but was quickly extinguished and caused no other damage. All units were back in service by 4:45 p.m..
