POTTER COUNTY MAN LOSES LIFE IN STATE HOSPITAL-TWO UNDER ARREST
Elwin Roberts Inmate of Institution Only Few Hours When Mistreatment of Attendants Causes Death - Towel Twisted About Neck of Insane Man to Subdue Him -Herbert Johnson Held on Murder Charge - Edward Genung Let Off With Small Fine - Funeral of Roberts Largely Attended.
Elwin Roberts of Sweden Valley, taken to the State Hospital for the Insane at Warren, Tuesday of last week, died as a result of improper treatment accorded him in that institution at an early hour Thursday morning. A brief mention was made In the Enterprise last week of Roberts having been taken to Warren for treatment.
As a result of the death of the patient, Herbert Johnson of Jamestown, 32, was held on a murder charge. Clifford Delp was held as a material witness.
As soon as the hospital authorities learned of the death the authorities were called in and arrests were made. A coroner's jury heard the evidence in the case and Friday they rendered a verdict that Roberts "had come to his death as a result of improper treatment contrary to the rules of the institution and poor health."
County Commissioners Benson, Howland and Nuschke, Dr. Robert McConeghy and Claude Roberts, a brother of the dead man, visited Warren Thursday to learn what they could in connection with the fatality.
Johnson was advised by his ttorney not to testify at the inquest, but Delp told of the rough treatment accorded the patient, stating that a towel had been twisted about his neck, and physicians who performed an autopsy stated they found abrasions and bruises on the man's neck and body.
The remains were brought to the late home and funeral service was held from the church at Sweden Valley, Sunday afternoon at 2:00 o'clock, with Rev. George G. Burke, pastor of the Free Methodist Church at Coudersport, officiating. There was a very large attendance at the last sad rites showing the respect neighbors had for Mr. Roberts.
- Burial was made in the Sweden Hill Cemetery.
Surviving the deceased is
- his aged mother, Mrs. Hoxy Roberts,
- also a brother mentioned above and
seven sisters. The sisters are:
- Mrs. Nellie Hill, Florida;
- Mrs. Minnie Crosby, Austin;
- Mrs. Lena Whiteman, Salamanca;
