Does anyone remember Mr Makowski and where he went? The Coudersport High School year book was dedicated to him, yet by the following school year he was gone.

Chris Bigham Picture does not look like Our Mr. Makowski. I suspect it is actually a photo of Stephen or Michael. Just sayin'.

That dedication is from the 1965 Couderean and the Class of 1965. I had Makowski for two years of Latin, two years of French and homeroom for one year. He was our senior year class advisor. He hosted some of at his home at least twice. One year Makowski organized a group from my class to go Christmas caroling. That was the only time in my life I went caroling, and it is a great memory.

Gerry Hamilton Do you think that obituary is our Mr Makowski? It doesn't mention his time teaching in Coudersport.

Larry Herbstritt I do. I found the obit at newspapers.com earlier today, and I thought it probably was our John P. Makowski, but I didn't think the linkage was conclusive. After you asked, I found more at newspapers.com, including the following correct details: father's name Frank, wife's name Jane, Cathedral Prep and Gannon College, as well as an Oil City connection. One of the clips is attached [The Oil City (PA) derrick 29 May 1957 W p10].

Gerry Hamilton I just found on Ancestry.com that Mr Makowski and his wife had one child that was born in Coudersport, Stephanie Anne Makowski, who died at age 15, in Paw Paw April 8, 1976.

Great memories of my favorite Latin teacher. He arranged a trip to Pittsburgh for us including John C Wetzel, Andrea Bankert and Camille Keck. We recited the pledge of allegiance and the Lord’s Prayer in Latin every class. And we went caroling too. Very dedicated and good man.

Mr Makowski was my English (Shakespeare) teacher and French teacher in 9th grade (1964-1965). He was a very important person in my life. It was Mr Makowski who took me and my newly formed band, "The Lads", under his wing and secured access to the music room after school where we could rehearse. Mr Makowski drove Allen Berfield and me to the music store in Olean and bought us sheet music, "This Diamond Ring, "She Loves You" and a Beatles "Fake Book". He set up our first performance in the high school gym following a Friday night basketball game. Mr Makowski was instrumental in Allen, Dale and me having a nice snare drum for Dale to play for that gymnasium show, because we were not welcome in the music department by the band leader, Mr Wilcox. His only request was that we perform a song he loved, "Tammy", which to his delight, we did. Without Mr Makowski, I don't think we could have maintained a continuous discipline as a band. On Saturday mornings he got us into the music room in the high school and recorded us. He then took the reel to reel recordings to the WFRM studios and the radio DJ was kind enough to play a few of them ON THE RADIO later in the day. The band morphed into Ollie And The Go Gos and after the 1964-1965 school year, I never saw Mr Makowski again. I often wondered if he was ever aware that that kid he helped, wound up having a career in music. Seeing this obituary brings tears to my eyes. I had hoped I would, one day, be able to tell him thank you.

Brenda Kenealy Williams I don't want to believe that's Mr Makowski's obituary ???? I found a July 14, 1965 Potter Enterprise that said that John Makowski had accepted a position in the language department at Alliance College, in Cambridge Springs. The obituary states that "He worked as a teacher for Alliance, and Orchard Lake St Mary's Prep, before retiring from Paw Paw High School after 40 years." But it didn't say Alliance College in Pennsylvania.

I think this confirms that the obituary above is for our John P Makowski. This August 21, 1963 Potter Enterprise clip tells of him becoming a "grand knight" of the Knights of Columbus, which is also mentioned in the obituary.

After we packed up our guitars and amps Mr Makowski handed us each a dollar bill, "this is your first dollar as musicians" he told us ?????

I have good memories of him as my Latin and French teacher. He actually had an after school group for Polish at one point. I always wondered what happened to him after he left Coudersport.

I’ve been wondering where he went, what he’s up to… one of my favorite and best teachers; I learned so much in his Latin classes. Makeupo, makeupere, makeupi, makeupto…
Yes, Brenda Kenealy Williams, I’ll never forget that Pittsburgh trip either; it was a state-wide Latin competition, an awesome experience, first time 'out on my own' like that.

Didn't the kids have a nickname of "Mousey" for Mr Makowski? I kinda remember hearing that name, though I never used it. He was just too nice to show any kind of disrespect. Ralph "Butch" Haskins, Monty Miles and I used to get out of study hall to go up to his room and clean the chalk boards and erasers.

Larry Herbstritt Maybe, but I don’t remember it. I certainly didn’t use it, nor did I refer to hardly any of our teachers by nickname, it seemed too… disrespectful, like you said.

I’ve been thinking about the Christmas caroling. He lived kind of across from Mr Schaub We went in and had cocoa and cookies as I recall. Such a generous, warm person. Spent his own personal time with students in positive ways. Didn’t make many like that.

Brenda Kenealy Williams Yes, Allen and I visited him at his house. I think it was the day he took us to Olean to buy sheet music. He lived down off the road on N West Street, almost across from Louie Schaub and not far from Mr Wilcox.

Brenda Kenealy Williams I did not realize, really, what an incredible person Mr Makowski was while he was in my life. It was only in my life rearview mirror that realization came to me. Though he was helping my "band", I knew, at least I felt, it was me he was concerned about. There were other moments I shared with Mr Makowski that were not music related that makes me believe that was the case. I can't go into them here. I don't know if he felt he had been successful before he left Coudersport. But he left me with warnings and heartfelt, tough love advice.

Mr. Makowski is high on my favorite list of Coudersport teachers. Known to his students for his generous and supportive yet serious nature, he agreed to be my instructor for Latin 3 during my last year in HS, translating Ciero and others - now a lost language to most including myself. Both he and his wife were the best.

Today, thanks to Gloria Sevinski Richardson, I attended a Catholic Mass that honored John Makowski in the same church where he was once a member of the congregation. I reminisced afterwards with a few who were there.

Mr. Makowski, lovingly called "Sir" by the Class of '65, lived across the street from my family home at 602 North West Street. I babysat for his two oldest children, Stephanie and Stephen. And, I took 4 years of Latin, 1 year of French, and a Polish class that he held after school hours from him. Loved this man! He and Jane were very good friends and neighbors with our family.

Teresa Castano Kisiel I first met Mr Makowski in September 1964, when I had him for French and Shakespeare. One day while checking everyone’s fingernails in class he wondered why I had the fingernail on my first finger longer. I told him I was trying to use it as a finger picking tool while playing my guitar. He was quite intrigued that I was playing guitar and by January of 1965 he had taken me under his wing and forced the music teacher to let my little band use the music room after school so we could rehearse. On Saturday mornings Mr Makowski recorded our rehearsals and took the tapes to the WFRM radio station, which they would play on the radio. Mr Makowski arranged for my band to play after a basketball game in February 1965 and asked one favor, that we play in addition to our exclusively Beatles repertoire, the song “Tammy”. Afterwards he gave us each a dollar bill as our first dollar for playing music. He had a loving and giving heart like no one I had ever known.
