My Aunt, Janice “Sibby” Kapp Carter passed away on Friday, August 20th. ????
She was the daughter of Dr. Paul R. Kapp (Kappy) and Flora Salamon Kapp.
My grandfather, Kappy, was the dentist in Shinglehouse for many, many years.

Obituary
Sibby Kapp Carter was born December 3, 1931 in Olean, New York to Dr, Paul R. Kapp and Mrs. Flora Salamon Kapp. They had come to Shinglehouse, Pennsylvania from medical schools in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania to setup their dental practice.

Sibby was the middle child of two brothers who were just three years and three months apart. They were raised in this small northwestern Pennsylvania town and she graduated from high school in 1949.

She graduated from Alleghany General Hospital school of nursing in 1952. Her first job was at the Municipal Hospital in Pittsburgh, where Dr. Jonas Salk was perfecting the polio vaccine. Her job was taking care of patients in iron lungs, in the last big polio epidemic in 1952.

She met her husband, a Pennsylvania native, in New Orleans and they were married in 1954. His job subsequently took them to Harrisburg and Allentown, Pennsylvania; the Washington DC area; Naperville, Illinois near Chicago and then to the Los Angeles area.

In 1979 she earned an associate’s degree in Human Services, with honors, from Glendale Community College in Glendale, California.

In 1980 she spent 3 months in Thailand as part of a World Vision Volunteer Medical Team in a Cambodian Refugee camp field hospital.

In the early 1980’s, at age 50, she found herself single. Not long after this, she became a Christian at a Billy Graham Crusade at the Anaheim Stadium in California. She had learned that God was there all the time.

For the next twenty years, she lived in a house that she loved - a historic, Tudor style townhouse - in a town that she loved - Pasadena, California - doing a job that she loved - home care nursing in Los Angeles County.

A long-time dream of living in a small, Eastern college town, in a house with a stream in the back yard was realized when she read about and moved to Brevard in the late 1990’s. Shortly thereafter, her daughter, two grandsons and her son all moved to Brevard from Arizona.

She was grateful to be a Christian, a member of the adult IV Sunday school class, and a member of a caring congregation at First Baptist Church in Brevard.
In her earlier years, she loved doing stitchery, sewing and crafts but a diagnosis of Macular Degeneration precluded those endeavors.
She loved to travel, and had been in every state and many destinations around the world.
But mostly she loved her church, God, her home, the color pink, her cat, her friends, her family and she was happiest being at home with them. She loved her family.

She is preceded in death by her brother Paul R. Kapp Jr and his wife, Shirley.

She is survived by
- her daughter, Meg Carter of Virginia Beach, Virginia;
- grandson Christopher Fisher of Brevard;
- grandson Justin Fisher and wife Shyannah of Lake Toxaway and their children Maliya Willow, Rabon Harley and Ashton Isaiah Fisher;
- son Mark Carter of Brevard and his daughter Brittany Ann;
- brother John R Kapp (Jack) of Manassas Virginia;
- niece Terry Guiffre and husband Tony of Haymarket, Virginia and
- nephew Greg Kapp and wife Suzette of Manassas, Virginia.

A celebration of life service will be held at First Baptist Church, Brevard, North Carolina at 10:00 am on Saturday the 28th of August, 2021. In lieu of flowers, she asked that contributions be made in her memory to First Baptist Church, 94 S. Gaston Street, Brevard, NC 28712.

So thankful to have had Sibby as our friend. We always loved our times spent with her. Sharing her experiences with us. Her love of everything pink. It was always so comforting in her house with the music she enjoyed listening to. She would tell us the funniest things. She enjoyed life. She enjoyed traveling. We will miss her greatly. Sibby Carter was a beautiful bright and amazing lady. I valued her friendship greatly during the time I lived in Brevard from 2002-2012. We always had great relaxing fun times together. Taking Sibby on garage sale outings was always an adventure, she loved doing that. Playing cards always a priority even in restaurants while waiting on our order- crazy but, fun when Sibby was around. Mini trips here and there to visit family friends or just for fun was always a great outing when Sibby was present. And, talk about being an outstanding organized hostess she took the prize, I learned a lot about how to be a hostess watching Sibby - she made it look easy. She loved her family dearly and was always available when they needed her. I would say Sibby was first class always in her speech, dress and helpful ways, always supportive to her friends as well.
