James E. Hackett, 82, died on November 23, 2015. Although he survived pancreatic cancer 27 years ago, he lost his battle with lung cancer. Jim was the husband of the late M. Dolores (Dee) Hackett with whom he celebrated 62 wonderful years of marriage. Dee and Jim danced for many years, and now they are dancing together once again.
Born in Shinglehouse, Pa., on March 1, 1933, Jim was the son of the late Leo and Virginia Hackett. He was very proud to be the first Eagle Scout in Potter County.
As a graduate of IUP, Jim taught high school math and science and was an adjunct instructor at St. Bonaventure University. After four years of teaching, Jim began his Information Technology career at Clark Brothers.
He moved his family to York in 1969, where he worked for Allis-Chalmers in IT and purchasing. He held various management positions before retiring in 1992 from Precision Components Corporation.
Jim was a member of the White Rose Polka Dancers, the Alpenrose German Club, the Lancaster Liederkranz, Moose Lodge, Free and Accepted Masons, and Hawks Club. He was a CanSurmount Coordinator and served on the Hellam Township Planning Commission.
Jim and Dee were travel escorts for AAA and Krause Travel. They enjoyed many trips to Germany, Alaska, Bermuda, Mexico, and the Caribbean Islands.
Papa Jim's pride and joy was his family. He is survived by four daughters and sons-in-law,
- Deanna and Tom Owens of York,
- Kathy and Michael Chronister of York,
- Joni and Robert Lyon of Mechanicsburg, and
- Jennie and Moe Galis of Coal Center, Pa.
Papa Jim cherished his grandchildren,
- Tina (Jim) Mandella,
- T.J. (Mary) Owens,
- Brad (Kristin) and
- Eric (Lindsay) Chronister,
- David (Kayla) and
- Jeffrey (Laura) Lyon,
- Robbie (Keren),
- Andy (Alicia), and
- Michael Galis;
beloved great-grandchildren include
- Marti and Nick Mandella,
- Bayla Dee, Leo, and Brielle Galis,
- and one-week old Jack Lyon.
Jim was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Kelly Rae Chronister.
- Visitation is scheduled for Friday, November 27, 2015, from 12 until 2 p.m. at the John W. Keffer Funeral Home, 2114 W. Market Street. Burial will be private.
