SMETHPORT - Funeral services for veteran educator, Mrs. Myra Cory Guenter, 86, of 205 Franklin St., who died at the home of her daughter in Wellesley, Mass., Monday, will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at the Jay M. Snyder Funeral Home where friends will be received after 7 p.m. today.
Born Aug. 26, 1887, in Eldred, the daughter of Benjamin Franklin and Ada Day Cory, she married Edward A. Guenter on Aug. 16, 1911, in Jamestown, N.Y. He died in 1949.
A graduate of Eldred High School, Sugar Grove Seminary and Otterbind College of Ohio, Mrs Guenter spent many years teaching in McKean County schools, retiring about 1960. In October 1970 she was the recipient of the Kathryn Brubaker Citation, a state recognition "for a lifetime of outstanding service to education," given by the Keystone State Reading Association.
She was a lifelong member of the United Brethern Church of Coryville, a member of the Smethport DAR, the Valley Garden Club of Farmers Valley and a director of the McKean County Historical Society.
Mrs. Guenter had served as curator of the Society's museum in the McKean County Courthouse for many years and delighted in touring the museum with school children of all ages.
A past president of the Smethport Travelers Club, she was a charter member of the Smethport Chapter 933, AARP; and was a member of Myrtle Chapter 46, Order of the Eastern Star of Port Allegany.
Survivors include the daughter, Mrs. Roger Curry of Wellesley; one son, Dr. Fritz E. Guenter of Smethport; seven grandchildren, eight great grandchildren; and one sister, Mrs. Alberta Flory of Bangor, Maine.
The Rev. Richard Shields, minister of the Smethport United Methodist Church, will officiate at the Thursday service. Burial will be in McKean Memorial Park, Lafayette.

GUENTER; Mrs. Myra Cory, 86, of 205 Franklin St., Smethport, Pa., died Monday. Jan. 21, 1974, at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Roger Curry of Wellesley, Mass. Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday and Wednesday at the Jay M. Snyder Funeral Home, Smethport, where a funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday. Burial will be in McKean Memorial Park, Lafayette. In lieu of flowers, the family has suggested memorials may be sent to the Port Allegany Community Hospital or to the charity of the donor's choice. Arrangements are under the direction of Snyder's.
