HORNELL WOMAN SHOT BY ADMIRER
Wellsville Man Evidently Murders Woman and Commits Suicide
Hornell, N. Y., Aug. 10. (AP) Miss Jennie Williams, 25, was found fatally wounded in bed in her Washington street apartment shortly after 10:00 A. M. today with the body of James Brown, 59, of (44 Fassett street) Wellsville, lying on the floor nearby. Chief of Police Howard M. Travis and Coroner M, G. Burch said it was a clear cut case of murder and suicide.
They were discovered by Mrs Gates Saunders, who shared the apartment.
Miss Williams was rushed to St James Mercy hospital, where she died at 10:50 A. M. She was shot three times in the head.
Brown apparently had been instantly killed by a bullet in the right temple.
In his pocket, said Chief of Police Travis was found a note from Miss Williams asking him to cease his attentions to her. Travis said he had learned Brown came here from Wellsville this morning.
No one heard the shots fired and there were no witnesses who saw Brown enter the apartment. Travis said that Brown was estranged from his wife and child.
______
Travis told the Corning Leader today that he had learned Miss Williams and Brown had been keeping steady company for several months, evidence having been "very friendly as recently as June.
Recently, Chief Travis said, the girl "threw him over." A note was found in the dead man's pocket in which he said he intended to commit suicide and "end my troubles on earth."
The police theory, according to Chief Travis, is that Brown came to Miss Williams' room this morning while she was asleep. She was a waitress, and was not scheduled to resume her duties until 7:00 P. M. tonight.
Brown entered the room and shot Miss Williams in her sleep, police believe, turning the gun on himself. No witnesses of the shooting, nor persons who heard the shots, are known, according to Chief Travis.
When found, Brown had been dead about 30 minutes, it was stated.
