OBIT: WILLIAM HENRY LEWIS b.1784 - d. 1866 Ulysses, Potter County, PA.
In Ulyssess, on the 29th August, WILLIAM LEWIS in the 81st year of his age.
Mr. Lewis was one of the pioneers of this county, having settled in Ulyssess nearly thirty years ago. Though at an advanced age he bore his full share in the toils incident to the settlement of a new country, and continued to labor till he was upward of eighty. He was remarkable for industruy and temperance. He was never known to be ??. Though educated in time when strong drink was thought to be a necessity, he was for the last twenty five years of his life a constituent devoted to total abstinence. He was a Jackson Democrat, but beleiving in the doctrine of the Wilmon Provisio he remained steadfast when the party under the lead of Gen. Cass forsook its free will principles and he ever after acted with the Republican party. He was a firm believer in the doctrine of universal salvation but regarding a pure heart and an upright life to be more important than a correct belief, he made no effort to secure converts to his faith. His patient serentiy in his last sickness was wonderful. The close of a long and useful life may well be tranquil. There was nothing terrible in his last hours, for the advance of the King Of Terrors was like the deepening of twilight and he seemed to gather the drapery of his couch about him to lie down to pleasant dreams.

What newspaper is this from? I wish it indicated his place of birth and more about Ruth A. Bierce. I will look at my tree to see where I left off with her lineage. It's all speculation at best.

Nancy Ballew The Potter Journal and News Item - 25 Sep 1866. I too was disappointed there was no mention of Ruth....she was supposedly still alive at the time of his death.

Nancy Ballew Hey, Nancy, have you had your DNA tested? Would be interesting to know since we share maternal DNA.....just curious. On the maternal line, the Bierce family goes back to Plymouth MA to the early 1600's. It's nuts. And from there to England. The maternal names are: Bierce-Sturdevant-Fuller-Sampson-Sprague-all of Plymouth MA, ending with Elizabeth (unknown) m. William Bassett emigrants from Kent, England.

Dawn Wick Schiller Thank you so much for the newspaper info. I looked for it in newspapers.com, but they are inconsistent with their searches. Now that I know the paper and date, I can search that way. I have my DNA results posted on ancestry.com, and have tried that avenue for more information on Ruth. She is one of my brick walls, and I hope one day to get proof of her Plymouth roots. Isaiah Bearse b. 1752 d. 20 OCT 1805 and wife Fear who was born in Plymouth, Mass. had a son Chancellor and a daughter Ruth born 1789 in Hamilon, Madison, NY. Othe children of the marriage were Sallie b. 1790, Alanson b. 1783, Deborah b. 1785, Almira b. 1791, Bathsheba b. 1793, Betsy b. 1795 and Alace b. 1797. I share DNA with a descendant of Chancellor Livingston Beirce.

Nancy, who is your direct Lewis relative, again??

Hi Nancy, I believe you are related to Burton Lewis, William and Ruth Althea's son. If that is so, and you share DNA with Chancellor Bierce, than that puts Ruth into that line of Bierce's. Are you sure? That would be great....that's the confirmation....hopefully.

I am a match to the descendant of Chancellor Bierce, and a direct descendant of William and Ruth Lewis by way of your great great great great? uncle Burton Lewis. I believe you descend from his sister Ann, correct? You helped me confirm the photo identity of Burton's wife Caroline Elizabeth Gridley. The penmanship on the photo matches my great grandfather's hand. It was a wonderful day for genealogy, as was yesterday when I noticed your post regarding William Henry's obituary. I am about to look for it again on the Newspapers site!!! You made my day ????

If what you say is true, that you are descendant from Chancellor Bierce, BROTHER to Ruth Althea son of ISAIAH AND FEAR BIERCE...and we can further conclude, that we are both descendant from William Lewis and Ruth A. Bierce, then we can with confidence say that ISAIAH AND FEAR are Ruths Family...... can we agree with that?

This is huge for me! Ruth has been my brick wall for so long. And I just traced her family back to 1600 England.

Found it! I made some corrections to the transcription, the first one being the headline which seems to actually read "84th" not "81st" year. The printing is faded, but the "th" is clear. The first missing word (??) is "incident" and the second is "idle." "Constituent devoted" is actually "consistent devotee." "Wilson" is "Wilmot." I think it's bold for a man of his age to switch parties. Gives me hope that change is possible. Thank you again for sharing this valuable information with us!!!

Nancy Ballew "Wilmot-Wilson"....that definately looks like an "m"....but, Wilson makes more sense.

Aha....it does mean Wilmot Provisio: The Wilmot Proviso was an unsuccessful 1846 proposal in the United States Congress to ban slavery in territory acquired from Mexico in the Mexican-American War. The conflict over the Wilmot Proviso was one of the major events leading to the American Civil War.

Nancy Ballew But he was actually 81 or 82 years old, depending on which of the two published death dates one uses, not 84.

Where was he buried? I can't find him in the Ulysses Cemetery, but I did find 2 of his children.
May be an image of food and text that says 'LEWIS, Crayton. Spouse of Caroline Hinmam. Born 2-11-1813, died 1-13-1870 Son of William and Ruth A. (Bierce) Lewis, born in Upper Lisle NY. Wed 3-3-1835. (in the 1840,1850 Ulysses Census)'

I use it a lot when finding relatives, then I find Obits that show children alive and work my way around in Facebook. I have found so many cousins this way, and met a few.

The Lewis' are very well documented otherwise....I just recently had my mtDNA analyzed and realized I do not have a very complete maternal line. It ends with Ruth Althea Bierce of CT. I want to confirm who her CT family was. Nancy Ballew and I believe it is Isaiah Bierce of CT but there is no confirmation.
