C. L. S. C.
Having had many inquiries in regard to I this course of reading, the INDEPENDENT has kindly given me permission to talk about it through the paper for the benefit of its j many readers.
The initial letters, C. L. S, C. are for Chautauqua Literary and Scientific Circle, whose grand rallying point is at Lake Chautauqua, Western New York. It is an organization which offers to every English-speaking person, irrespective of circumstances, the first step toward a liberal education. A society for the promotion of study at home, and has a regular four years course carefully prepared. During the four vears one obtains a knowledge of Greek History and Literature, Roman History and Literature, English History and Literature, American History and Literature. "The four years’ course of study embraces a broad view of History, Literature, Art, Science, Man and Life.”
STUDIES KOB 1888 AND 1889.
Outline History of Greece.
Preparatory Greek Course in English.
College Greek Course in English.
Character of Jesus.
Chemistry, Zoology and the readings of the "Chautauquan.”
The books and the subscription to the "Chatauquan” cost from six to seven dollars per year. Two or more persous may use one set of books and thus save expense. It is better for each member to have a copy of the "Chautauquan”. The above cost of books, together with the annual membership fee of fifty cents, is the whole expense.

This reading is all in English, a knowledge of foreign language is not needed. One may join the C. L. 8. C. t for one year. A full course requires four years, and even after graduation one may continue to read and add seals to the diploma which is received at the close of the four years’ redding. To become a member, send your name on a postal to Miss K. F. Kimball, Plainfield, N. J. She will send you a blank application for membership, which you fill aud return to her with the fee of fifty cents. She is the Secretary of the C. L. S. C., and will forward all needed information. This plan of reading originated with Bishop J. H. Vincent, and was placed before tfce public in I*7B. The enthusiasm with which the C. L. S. C. has been received proves bow great was the need nf just such a movement. Ten classes have been enrolled, numbering over two hundred thousand. More than fourteen thousand have been graduated. Grand results hare been reached. The C. L. S. C. is indeed a power for good, past computation, and is soon to be one of the great educatioual powers of the time. AIM. "This society aims to promote habits of reading and study in nature, art. science, and in seeuisr and sacred literature, in connection with the routine of daily life, and to develope the habit of close, connected and persistent thinking. TIME REQUIRED. An average of forty minutes each weekday will enable the student in nine months’ time to complete the books required for the year. MKMMORANPA. A list of questions at close of year, sent each member, is the annual examination. They are very easy, and nothing to be dreaded. Merely an outline to show "committee" you have read the required l»ooks. I»cal Circle* are a great benefit, "For in Cuiou there is Strength." From ray own experience I feel confident that anyone taking up this reading, will oever afterward regret the time or expense given to it. Hattie S. Hauser. Everybody should take in the Fair.
