Bertie Leon Brookover of Tavares, FL, formerly of Stewart, Ohio; died Wednesday May 16, 2001 in Eustis, FL.
Born July 8, 1913 in Fairview, WV, he was the son of the late Learney French and Mary Alice Jones Brookover.
He was a 1936 graduate of the agricultural sciences program at West Virginia University, and an avid fan of the Mountaineers. He was a World War II veteran of the 101 First Airborne Division and achieved the rank of Captain. He also served 17 years with the Reserves as a Major.
He owned a dairy farm at the site where Federal Hocking High School now stands. He also built, owned and operated Skyline Speedway and was a timber contractor. He was a member of the Blackburn Hill Church of Christ in Athens, Ohio. He was a life member of Disabled American Veterans Post 37 of Athens, and a past member of Stewart Grange, Rome Canaan School Board and the Farm Bureau.
He is survived by his wife, Alice O. Brookover; a sister, Sylvia Ammons; children, Angy Cessna of Winchester, VA, Margaret Bennett of Athens OH, Susan (Robert) Sebring of Athens, OH, Nancy (Dave) Lunsford of Key Colony Beach, FL; stepchildren, John and Carl Campbell of Florida; 15 grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren, and 4 great-great-grandchildren.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his previous wife, Thelma Irene Neely; a son Bertie L. Brookover Jr; a grandson, Jeffrey Blaine Cessna; a great-granddaughter Sabrina; a brother, Jacob Brookover; and sisters Gail Hamilton, Stella Tennant and Chole Brookover.
Services will be held Monday, 1pm at Hughes Funeral Home in Athens, with John King officiating. Burial will be in Coolville Cemetery, with military services conducted by Athens VFW Post 37.
