Three great hires from my old neighborhood! Glenn Jones lived next door, Mary Moore lived one block up on South Main, and Jane Gardner lived 2 blocks away on South Main. Great people!

My mom cut this very photo out of The Enterprise and put it in a scrapbook. As I've written before, Glenn Jones was one of my all-time favorite teachers. I got to know your parents really well, Paul, and was tickled they visited us in Baton Rouge. Your mom loved to laugh and Lord knows if I have an audience of even one, I will do my best at hamming it up! Miss Moore taught younger brothers Doug and David. I would wait outside her classroom after school for Doug and she would always stop and say hello to me. Why am I rambling on? Because I am old and confused. The end.

My mother graduated from Coudersport High School in 1936 and headed off to the Washington Secretarial School. These classes were held in the Chrysler Building in NYC. She lived with her Uncle Walter Mosch in Wycoff, NJ while attending school, graduated and worked in the city. Later she met an accountant named Edwin Gamble and was married. She and Ed lived in Brooklyn where my two brothers John and Tom were born. Later they purchased a home on Long Island. Along came WWII, Ed was drafted into the Army, killed at the Battle of the Bulge and was buried in Luxemburg. Shortly thereafter, with her two young boys she returned to Coudersport where she met my father Lawrence Gardner. Dad was born in Corning, NY, enlisted in the army aircorps, served in Panama for six years and moved to Coudersport after the war. He was working for Pete Farmelo as a butcher when they met. They were married, later opened Larry's Bakeshop and had four children: Larry, Pete, myself and Betty. In 1961 she decided to put her secretarial education back to its intended use.

Prior to 1961 Mrs Moore, then single Miss Carr, taught kindergarden. I don't inow when she started, she was there in 1947 or when she left.

I don't know what I am even doing in you kids post. This was all after my time except I knew the three main characters well. Bought the 402 South Main St home from the Garners. Except I have enjoyed this thread very much and especially Paul's mom's history. I knew bits and pieces but never all together as Paul so skillfully did. Thank you very much Paul. Another one of the several posts I have copied and saved in my Word files. Enjoy opening them and rereading and sharing with anyone that requests them. God bless us all. ?

I remember Jane from school. She was so nice to everyone. Also I was working at Cole Manor when Jane was living there. I have some fond memories of her stay there.

I had to call my Mom to "share" all of your comments with her, which, of course, WARMED HER HEART, to say the least! I wish she were on Facebook, because she's surely missing out, but, she thanks each one of you for your kind words, and for sharing your memories, and THANK YOU, Paul Gardner for posting this lovely memory! ???? Warmest wishes, and sincere thanks from me as well! I was, and always will be my Grandpa's biggest fan! He might not have been large in stature, but he was a GIANT OF A MAN with a heart the size of Texas, you can believe it! And remained faithful to his God, and his family until he took his last breath. And consequently, he LOVED ALL HIS STUDENTS!!! And said so many times! When he was "forced" to retire, it broke his heart! THANK YOU all for your kindness!

P.S. After he retired, he was told that he could come back and substitute teach if he would like. He, of course, jumped at the chance to continue to teach!!!! So excited!!! Well, as the story goes, his first assignment was KINDERGARTEN! After a few days of that, the little ones had "worked the old man over", and he decided that he was finally done! HA HA HA HA HA HA! ????
