· Mrs Lettie Potter

Rummaging through some old family photographs, I came across these pictures of the Potter family, who were related to my grandfather, James. H. Smith Sr.
The patriarch of the family was Milton J. Potter, the handsome bearded fellow in the bowtie. He was my grandfather’s uncle.
Milton Potter and his wife, Lettie (Gordnier) Potter, had six children, Margaret, James, Robert, Willis, Paul and Milton. Margaret and James both died young. But the four other boys, Robert, Willis, Paul and Milton grew up in Coudersport and all attended good colleges: Princeton, Cornell and Bucknell.
Milton Potter, also known as Mitt, was superintendent of Silver Truss Co. and also was a real estate dealer. The family lived at a house at 104 Allegany Ave, that Milton Potter built around the turn of the century.
My grandfather lived for a time with the Potters so he could attend Coudersport High School and was known unofficially as the fifth Potter boy.
Pictured here are the four Potter boys, Robert, Willis, Paul and Milton. Unfortunately, the photo I have, which is dated July 1935, does not say which one is which.
I visited the area in 2023 to trace my grandfather’s boyhood and visited the cemetery in Raymond where some ancestors are buried, including my great-grandfather and great-great-grandfather. Milton Potter and some other family members are buried at the Eulalia Cemetery in Coudersport. I wanted to visit that one because my middle name is Potter.
I also had my picture taken on the porch of the Potter home on Allegany Avenue. Now I have a better appreciation for what a special place Potter Country truly is.
