LUCY SWEET BARBER
Lucy Sweet Barber died at her home between Alfred and Alfred Station, Sunday afternoon, May 5, after an illness of about five days.
Mrs Barber had been keeping house for a Mr. Wheeler on Jersey Hill the past winter. Her son Vernon moved to Alfred about two weeks ago and she came back to live with his family. The house which she occupied was in very poor condition, with water standing in the cellar and the rooms wet and damp, and she was taken sick with pneumonia, which resulted in her death.
Mrs. Barber was born in Alfred, May 7, 1833, thus lacking only two days of being 68 years old when she died. She married Wm. Barber Sept. 21, 1848.
Eleven children were born to them, five of whom survive,
- George of Hebron, Pa,
- Vernon and
- Mrs. Agnes Babcock of Alfred,
- Mrs Mary Morse of Bolivar and
- Mrs. Emma Jones of Angelica.
Mr. Barber died Nov. 25, 1889.
Mrs. Barber joined the Second Alfred SDB church in 1878 and was a member of that church at the time of her death.
Funeral was held to-day at 2 PM from the Alfred Station church.
Mrs. Barber gained considerable notoriety about a dozen years ago, when she took up the cause of woman suffrage, and voted at an election held in this town. It caused much comment at the time and the case was carried into court, but was finally dropped.
