· BAD FRANK PHILLIPS KILLS JIM VANCE POINT-BLANK!!!
PIKEVILLE, KY - The son of William "Billy" Phillips and Mary May King, Franklin "Bad Frank" Phillips, later known in Appalachia as a dangerous Pike County law enforcer and noted gunslinger, was ultimately buried next to his second wife, Nancy McCoy "Hatfield" Phillips (once the wife of Johnse Hatfield, first child of Devil Anse Hatfield) at Phelps, Kentucky.
During the feud-era, Bad Frank, who claimed to have once road(sic) with the notorious Jesse James and his gang, became a Kentucky Deputy Marshall and the sworn enemy of the feudin' Hatfields of Logan County, WV.
During the period, Frank and his marauders tracked, abused, and arrested several Hatfields and their supporters after crossing the border into the Mountain State with a fist-full of feud warrants.
On Jan. 8, 1888, Uncle Jim Vance and Cap Hatfield, Devil Anse’s second son, were ambushed while hunting. The attack was perpetrated by a heavily-armed Kentucky posse journeying near Vance’s Logan County home at Thacker Mountain, now located in Mingo County. Bad Frank led the posse.
In the skirmish that ensued, Vance was seriously wounded, though Cap barely escaped the chaotic scene on foot. Vance, suffering profusely from the bullet wound, was ultimately killed execution-style at close-range from the nickel plated six shooter belonging to Bad Frank.
A man who lived an especially violent life, Bad Frank was later shot in the leg during another explosive gun battle at a local saloon, which was unrelated with the Hatfield-McCoy feud. During a physician’s attempt to save his life, it became necessary that his leg be amputated due to gangrene. Bad Frank (Jul. 27, 1861 - Jul. 12, 1898) died within weeks of the shooting.
A small hand-cut gravestone shows where Bad Frank's leg was buried, all within a few feet of where he and Nancy were ultimately entombed in the Frank Phillips Cemetery, Phelps, Kentucky.

If it went down as the movie portrays, then his helper killed my 5th great grandfather Valentine Wall Hatfield for turning himself in, my guess is they made his ending as hellish as they could because of his name.
