The last post reminded me of a bit of a family mystery, perhaps fantasy, in the Neefe family tree. I'm not sure if it's real or surreal.
In the family tree of Mary Freeman I did not go beyond her 2nd great grandmother, Mary Elizabeth Neefe. So Mary Elizabeth Neefe is where I will begin this mystery.
Mary E Neefe was the daughter of Julius Neefe (1811-1893) & Susannah Noble (1813-1896)
Julius Neefe was the son of Edward Franz Neefe (1780-1838)& Helena Friest (1782-1860)
Edward's and Helena's sons emigrated to the United States, Julius, Gustave Adolph and Edward Franz Neefe to Potter County, PA. And so, all the Neefe families in Potter County share Edward and Helena Friest Neefe as common ancestors. Those that come to mind in addition to Mary Freeman are
- Eugene "Gene" Neefe married to Myra Bachman,
- Richard "Dick" Neefe married to Barb McCloud,
- Terry Neefe, married to Karla Sevinsky,
- Christine Neefe (my ex-wife),
- Jeanette Penny Neefe Gavitt,
- Dennis Neefe,
- and the children of Blanch Neefe Maynard,
- plus the descendants of Raymond Leroy Gross, which would include
- Evelyn Gross Johnson (Jenigen) and her grandson,
- Travis Gleason.
All are descendants of this mystery Neefe ancestor. This mystery Neefe ancestor is the POSSIBLE father of the aforementioned, Edward Franz Neefe born in January 1780 in Leipzig, Saxony, Germany and died in 1838 in Roda, Saxony, Germany.
Ancestry.com has a feature in which it highlights in green "Potential Father" and "Potential Mother". A potential father and mother appears on Ancestry for Edward Franz Neefe.
That "Potential Father" turns out to be a guy named Christian Gottlob Neefe born February 5, 1748. This Christian G Neefe would have been 32 years old when Edward Franz Neefe was born. Edward was born in Leipzig, Saxony, Germany and Christian Gottlob Neefe was born in Chemnitz, Saxony, Germany. The two towns are about 40 miles apart. However, in 1780, when Edward Franz was born, Christian was living in Bonn, Germany.
There are several family tree links between Edward Franz Neefe as the son of Christian Gottlob Neefe on MyHeritage but I have doubts about their accuracy.
Another barrier to the connection of the Potter County Neefes being descended from Christian Gottlob Neefe beyond geographic is the fact that no Potter County Neefe, to my knowledge followed in the footsteps of Christian Gottlob Neefe for a means of living. Thus, all the Neefe immigrants to Potter County lived on farms. In sharp contrast, this "Potential Father" was a German opera composer and conductor. He received a musical education and started to compose at the age of 12. He studied law at Leipzig University, but subsequently returned to music to become a pupil of the composer Johann Adam Hiller under whose guidance he wrote his first comic operas.
In 1776 Neefe joined the Seyler theatrical company of Abel Seyler (then) in Dresden, and inherited the position of musical director from his mentor, Hiller. He later became court organist in Bonn and was the principal piano teacher of Ludwig van Beethoven. He helped Beethoven produce some of his first works. His best known work was a Singspiel called Adelheit von Veltheim (1780). In Bonn, Neefe became prefect of the local chapter of the Illuminati, the Minervalkirche Stagira. He died in Dessau.
Though there are some Saxony, Germany connections and the surname, Neefe, is a somewhat unique name, particularly that spelling, I have serious doubts the Potter County Neefe families are descendants of Christian Gottlob Neefe. More likely, Christian Gottlob Neefe and Edward Franz Neefe share common ancestors and this would make the famous piano teacher of Ludwig V Beethoven a distant cousin

I think my sister-in-law, Linda Grupp Gamble, ties into the Neefe's on her mother's side?
