Andersonville is the closest thing to Hell's deepest depths on the surface of the earth. And that's a good place for those men that run the place down there. But I'm only human. Hard to be forgiving for such treatment of American Servicemen. I'm not the judge, God is.

My cousin Lowry D Titus was also in Andersonville and wrote letters home, he never had ill will against his guards. He stated plainly that they suffered as badly as the prisoners. In reality, and per his last letter, Andersonville was a disaster from day 1 as the Hospital was upstream from the prison, therefore all waste, disease, and filth from amputations flowed right through the prison. In his last letter he said the pile outside of "arms and legs was a mile high" Lowry carried his little Testement and tried to carry himself by it"s teachings, walked out of Andersonville, sat under a tree and died' He left a wife and three very small children. May all of our brave young men Rest In Peace.

Caution- As I was entering this photo into my file for George Higley, I found the portrait already loaded for his son, John Rowe Higley, 72nd NY Infantry (shared by Lanny Nunn last August). Father & son, maybe they looked alike... alot alike:

George's son John Rowe enlisted 17 July 1861 and saw a lot of action over his 3y 11m 12d of service, right through Lee's retreat of July 1865.

I can't imagine that one survives 4 years of such a conflict without having some serious issues after surviving some serious battles. But at least John made it home.
