County District Attorney Wins By More Than Three-To-One In Republican Primary
Democrats Give Him Four-To-One Margin Over Incumbent Judge Robert R. Lewis Harold C. Holcomb, Carleton A. Roberts Win.
A record turnout of voters at this week's primaries nominated Walter P. Wells, of Coudersport, for judge of Potter County. Wells won the republican nomination by more than 3 to 1 over his nearest opponent, the present Judge Robert R. Lewis, and captured the democratic tally by more than 4 to 1. A total of 2 960 registered republicans gave their support to Mr. Wells, as against 930 for Judge Lewis, and 318 for Paul W. Cauffiel, of Coudersport. Registered democrats voted 1,250 for Mr. Wells, with 276 casting their ballots for Mr. Lewis, and 139 for Mr. Cauffiel. Mr. Wells, who has been the county's district attorney since 1934, had a margin of 2,030 votes over Judge Lewis in the republican primary, and a margin over the latter of 954 votes in the democratic contest. The total republican vote cast for the office of judge was 4,208 out of a total registration of 5,552, for a percentage of votes cast to voters registered of sligthly over 75 With a total democratic registration of 2,497, the democratic vote cast for the nomination for judge was 1,665, or a percentage of slightly more than 66.

Stanley Welfling, of Germania, polled 2,040 votes to win the republican nomination for county treasurer over Lewis L. Franke, of Coudersport, who received 1,708. Mr. Welfling will be opposed in the November elections by Helen E. French, Genesee Township, who was unopposed for the democratic nomination.

Calvin C. Carpenter, Genesee Township, won the republican nomination for the office of register and recorder, receiving 2,907 votes, defeating Arthur Bamford, Coudersport, First Ward, who received 912. The democratic nominee is Gerald R. Carley, Roulette Township, who was unopposed !

The present prothonotary, Carleton A. Roberts of Coudersport, received 2,474 republican votes and was nominated for another term over two opponents. C' William David, Roulette Township, who received 755 votes, and David W. Hammond, Coudersport, who obtained 763. Democrats nominated Arthur Fitch, Austin, who was not opposed.

The present sheriff, Harold C. Holcomb, Eulalia Township received 2,841 votes to':wln renominatlon on the republican ticket for a second term, defeating Clifford G. Reynolds, Harrison Township, who obtained 1,324 votes. Richard C. Neefe Jr., Coudersport, was unopposed for the democratic nomination.

Maurice Swift, Hebron Township, was high man among eight republicans seeking the office of county commissioner, receiving 1,395 votes. Henry C. James, Allegany Township, was second in the unofficial returns, receiving 1,293 votes to lead Garrie W Benson, Abbott Township, by 13 votes, the latter receiving 1,280. A few votes of those now in their country's- service may be received before the deadline for such voters. The votes cast for the remaining five candidates may be found in the table on page one.
