Abigail was Johnson's mother. When Abigail Mason was born in 1793 in Berkshire County., her father, Malaca, was 29 and her mother, Elizabeth, was 29. In 1796, her father purchased 200 acres in partnership with George Stone. The land was 1/2 of lot number 28 in Walton’s Patent, Schuyler (later Newport) Twp, Herkimer County, NY. This land was just north of the main migration route through NY state along the Mohawk River. She married Benjamin Chase in 1809. They had 12 children in 26 years. She died on March 29, 1853, in Michigan, at the age of 60.
When Malachai Malaca Mason was born on June 6, 1764, in Swansea, Massachusetts, his father, Brooks, was 26 and his mother, Anne, was 22. Malachai moved to Lanesborough MA with his parents when he was six years old in 1770. When the Revolutionary War came in 1775, the Masons of Berkshire County, MA responded in large numbers. Brooks Mason (Malaca’s father) enlisted in Captain Bussey”s company in 1777 and saw 28 days of service. Malaca’s older brother Michael also enlisted in 1777 but he served on six different occasions until 1780. Malaca first enlisted at age 16 on 12 October 1780 in Captain Wheeler’s company, Colonel Simond’s regiment and served eight days in a march on Manchester, NH. One year later he served in the same company in Colonel Barnes regiment for 11 days in a march on Saratoga, NY on 29 October 1781.
He married Elizabeth Hall on December 11, 1785. They were married by his second cousin, Rev Nathan Mason who was at one time a contemporary pastor of Malaca’s grandfather, Russell Mason, in Swansea. The newly married couple began their life farming in Berkshire County. They had 10 children during their marriage. Having settled his estate affairs, he and his wife moved to Wales, Erie County, NY in 1837, to live with their son Garner. The next year, he died on March 6, 1838, in Strykersville, New York, at the age of 73, and was buried in the Strykersville Pioneer Cemetery
