From: "Presidents, Soldiers, Statesmen" Vol 2, Potter Co. 1895
William A. Cole Was born in Cortland Co., NY, Jan. 15, 1832, and was a son of John and Betsey (McNish) Cole, both of whom are now dead.
Almira Smith who became his wife Sept. 25, 1855, in Oswayo, PA., was born June 3, 1838, in Harrison, Potter Co., PA. Her parents were Jonathan and Catherine (Kiser) Smith and are now deceased.
Ten children have blessed this marriage,
- Charles H., - Arthur L.,
- Carrie,
- James H.,
- Addie,
- John H.,
- Angie,
- Orrin L.,
- Mollie and
- Maggie.
Comrade Cole was farming when he took up arms in defense of his country at the age of 32 years Sept. 20, 1864 at Clara, PA., as a private in Co. D, 13th NYHA, 20th A.C. His services consisted of guard and garrison duty at Gosport Navy Yard. He was honoroably discharged June 21, 1865, at Norfolk, VA.
He had two brothers in the late war,
- James in 46th PA. V I, was held a prisoner in Libby and
- Deloss in 71st NY VI.
Hulett, a brother of his wife, served in 210th PA, V I, died from wounds received in front of Petersburg;
his grandfather, Azer Cole, served in the War of the Revolution while his father served in the War of 1812.
Comrade Cole has held various twp. offices;
- supervisor five years,
- collector one year,
- auditor nineteen years,
- school director nine years, twp. and
- school treasurer two years, and
- assessor five years;
he is a member of G. H. Barnes Post, 175, and his wife is a member of G. H. Barnes W. R. C., No. 130,
he has a pension, is a farmer and his address is Clara, PA.
