FIRES
The Conesus Center Fire.
AUGUST 28th, 1871.
FRIEND BUNNELL; - Our very desirable rain storm on Saturday paid a most destructive and disastrous visit to Conesus Center. At about 4 p. m. a shaft of lightning struck Mr. 0. M. Herrick's barn, consuming it and all its contents save his horse, and that was so injured (being dragged from the barn in almost a lifeless condition) that it is likely never to be of service. The fire communicated to Mr. Henry S. Gilbert's barn, consuming it with contents; thence to the hay scales and then to Mr. Wm. H. Miller's store, destroying everything except a few of his goods, that were removed in a very damaged condition. On it moved northward, consuming in its terrible march a harness shop and hotel, both owned by Mr. L. H. Baldwin. But very little was saved from the hotel, and that much injured. A grocery, still north, occupied by Mr. Lysander Snyder, and contents, also a dwelling house attached, occupied by Mr. R. Swarts were entirely destroyed. All the out buildings attached to the above premises were burned. Some of the buildings were insured to a limited extent. But the loss is almost irreparable to our little town.

This is a excerpt from "The Story of Crockett's Corners", by S. Edward Hitchcock
Lysander Snyder, or Captain Snyder, as he was usually called, married a younger daughter of the landlord and kept a store at Conesus Center in part of the house in which they lived and which stood where Walter Green's store stands now. This was burned in the fire of 1872, after which he moved to the Corners and lived in the house now owned by Mrs. Lola Smith. At that time there was a one-story building between the house and the hotel where he carried on a small business in groceries and men's furnishings.
The Livonia Gazette

Thursday, June 1, 1939
(continued from May 25, 1939)
He was a very small, feeble man. I have heard that he never weighed one hundred pounds. As a boy I passed many rainy afternoons with him in that little store, mostly listening to his praise of the Generals who had carried the Civil War to a successful conclusion. He died at the home of a brother in Springwater and his body was buried in the Alger Cemetery at Conesus. Thus it will be seen that with one son-in-law sounding the praises of the Union Generals, and another giving his life to the Union, the Confederate sentiments of the father-in-law did not extend to the younger members of the family. There was one son, Neil, who ran away from home at about 20 years of age and was never heard from afterwards. The uncertainty of his life or death tied up the sale of the property for several years until he was pronounced legally dead by the courts.

[Notation: As with all so-called, "recollections", many such writings are void, or lack actual or validated facts.
Example: The article (first above) written at the time of the fire in Conesus Center, which occurred in August of 1871 - Fact.
Mr. Hitchcocks "recollections" say the fire was in 1872 - "recollection", Not Fact.
Consume with a grain of salt, as the ole saying goes.]

Benjamin, Dorinda with sons Lysander, Alonzo and Nelson, arrived in Springwater on the 20th of March 1817. The following year, 1818, their daughter Adeline was born, then followed by DeWitt in 1820 and Henry in 1822.
Benjamin was a carpenter and joiner by trade and as of this writing, there still stands, a number of the original buildings that he built. He was the first to built the frame stile structures, in homes and barns in Springwater. I have been fortunate enough, to have photographed a number of these structures for our family history. I am a direct descendant of Azor Cole (5th great grandfather), father-in-law of Benjamin Snyder, (5th great uncle) and I am related to many of the earliest settlers in Springwater. I am related to everyone who is buried in this cemetery.
This large monument stands alone. There is no information listed on it, and there are no other visible headstones in close proximity.
Regarding this cemetery, my photos were taken in October of 2008. Green Gull Cemetery was VERY overgrown at that time, and there had been no upkeep within this cemetery from at least the 1960's, when I with my grandparents visited. Many stones that where there then, were not there in 2008. There was much damage to many smaller stones by way of weatherization, falling trees, and vandalism.

Friday, January 23, 1884
Alonzo Snyder, an old resident of Springwater and a man well known throughout Livingston county, died on Tuesday afternoon, at the age of 69 years. Mr. Snyder had been ailing for some time and his death, therefore, was not in the nature of a surprise to his friends. He had been quite prominent in party politics for many years, representing his town in the board of supervisors and ailing other offices of trust. He had many warm friends in different parts of the county, who will hear with prof and regret the news of his death.
