Frank Schoendorfer, born in Vienna, Austria 14 Mar 1867, son of Ludwig Schoendorfer, a German, and Francisca Elias, a Viennese. He moved with his parents to Germany when he was four years old, later returning to Austria where he completed three years of military training. His musical career started in his early childhood in Fuessen, Germany. He also studied in Vienna and later completed a three year study in Budapest, Austria. Upon his arrival in the United States on 31 Dec 1887, he was engaged with his music in New York City and Philadelphia. Following this he traveled to Germania, PA, with an excursion of artists, and started his band career as organizer and director of the Germania Band. On 7 Mar 1889, he was united in marriage to Miss Anna E Mosch of Germania, Daughter to Karl Herman and Caroline Scheider Mosch. In the ensuing years he organized and directed bands at Ulysses, Coudersport, PA., Corning and Wellsville, NY. He also was engaged as musical instructor and assistant conductor of music at the Mansfield State Normal School. One of the highlights of his life was the time he spent as baritone soloist in John Phillip Sousa's Band during the season of 1905. Mr. Schoendorfer was director of the famous New York Central Railroad Band here from the time of his arrival from Wellsville on 21 Jun 1911, until he was retired by the railroad on 30 Sep 1932. He was employed as a blacksmith at the Avis and Albany shops. His musical career as director of the band was well known in virtually every town on the New York Central railway. During World War One, the Avis band took an active part in campaigns held throughout the country. The high esteem in which he was held by NYC officials is attested in the fact that he was always called upon to direct the massed bands of seven and eight hundred pieces at the annual gatherings of railroad employees. These events were held in large cities such as Cleveland, Columbus, Pittsburgh and Buffalo. He was a member of the Williamsport Symphony Orchestra and assisted in various other symphonic organizations in surrounding communities. He also assisted in the reorganization of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Band, Lock Haven and acted as its director and was instrumental in organizing bands in smaller towns throughout Central Pennsylvania. Frank Schoendorfer died 10 Jul 1935 at his home in Jersey Shore, PA Frank and Anna had four children: Hilda W. 1891-1974, Lillian 1892-1895, Carl M. 1900-1976 and Frank L. 1902-1968. He came to the United States in 1887 and was engaged with his music in New York City and Philadelphia. The attached photo depicts the New York Central Railroad Band with Frank Schoendorfer as Director. This photo was taken in front of the Jersey Shore Elks Club on Main Street. As you see in the photo, Frank's Daughter Hilda Schoendorfer Coates and her husband Francis Drew Coates also played in the band at that time. This building stands today and is located on South Main Street in Jersey Shore, PA. In 1889, two years after Frank’s arrival in America, he married Anna Elizabeth Mosch (1871-1935). I do not have particular details, but I’m sure he met Anna Mosch on his muscial excursion to Germania. Anna was the fifth child of Carl Herman Mosch and Caroline Scheider. Frank is the first of four generations of Frank Shoendorfer’s in this leg of the family. Frank’s son was named Frank Ludwig Schoenoderfer (1902-1968), his son was named Frank Moyer Schoendorfer (b. 1931), and his son was named Frank Moyer Schoendorfer Jr. (b. 1956). Frank introduced me to Wayne one day over lunch in Jersey Shore this summer. Wayne gave me some of the photos that I have posed in this group. Jersey shore is where Karl Herman Mosch's daughter, Anna Mosch and her husband Frank Schoendorfer settled and raised their family. Frank was born in Austria in 1867, studied at the Vienna Music Conservatory, and immigrated to the US in 1887. In his early career he was baritone soloist for John Philip Sousa's band and in 1911 took charge of the New York Central Band in Avis. He made it one of the finest bands in the east. He retired from the railroad in 1932 and became music instructor and assistant conductor of music at Mansfield and played with the Williamsport Symphony Orchestra. This photograph from Wayne’s book shows Frank, his sons Frank Ludwig and Carl Mosch Schoendorfer and son-in-law Francis Drew Coates. On Monday I drove up to Jersey Shore, PA to meet with Frank Moyer Shoendorfer and his wife Joyce. Actually the first time I met Frank and his wife was at the Kortz Reunion in June. Frank is the son of the late Frank Ludwig Schoendorfer and Henrietta Moyer of Jersey Shore and the grandson of Anna Mosch and Frank Schoendorfer. Frank M.and Joyce reside in Collegeville, PA and spend summers just north of Jersey Shore. Frank gave me a tour of Jersey Shore including the homes where his parents and grandparents lived. I was also given a tour of the river end of town where my Grandparents, Hertha Mosch and Egbert McElroy resided when Grandpa McElroy worked for the New York Central Railroad in the early 1900s. My mother Jane and her brother Clinton were also born in Jersey Shore in 1917 and 1919. We also visited the Schoendorfer family plot at the Jersey Shore Cemetery. Frank is a third generation of Schoendorfer musicians for which I will expand on in future posts.

I spoke with Frank Moyer Schorndorfer who is 85. His father was Frank Ludwig, 1902-1968. His grandfather Frank was from Vienna, Austria and married Anna Elizabeth Mosch Schoendorfer, 1871-1935. He would like to come to the reunion but will comfirm later. If he comes he said he would bring pictures and genealogy. He has also been in touch with Frank Tucker who does a lot of genealogy for our families.

MEMORIAL DAY AT JERSEY SHORE, PA HAS BEEN AN IMPORTANT TRADITION FOR THE SCHOENDORFER FAMILY.
As stated by Frank Moyer Schoendorfer,
grandson of Anna Mosch and Frank Schoendorfer:
“It is a significant holiday for the Schoendorfer Family. As long as I can remember we went to the Jersey Shore Cemetery on Memorial Day. Of course a few days prior we decorated the Family burial area with red, white & blue flowers. On Monday (May 30, 2016) I’ll be at the JS Cemetery, and will conduct the Uplifter March that the band will play during the program. The band will be made up of the JSHS Band and augmented by the JS Town Band. I will play cornet for the other band numbers. Included in this program the Fairplay Brass will play “The Armed Forces Salute”, and I’ll play cornet with them. The brass group consists mainly of prior music students of my Father and they too played in the JSHS Band when in high school”
Frank goes on to say: “The Schoendorfer Memeorial Day Tradition originated with my Grandfather, as director of the New York Central Railroad Band. My Father began his career with this band in 1914 when as a 12 year old he carried the bass drum. My uncles where also in this band; Francis Coates, drummer and my uncle Carl Schoendorfer, baritone. My Dad later played trumpet in the NYC Band. This band moved to Albany, NY in the 1930’s. The Band paraded to the Cemetery playing marches, and upon arrival at the JS Cemetery they would go into a dirge and play “We Honor the Brave”. Many of the parts of this music were lost or mutilated over the years. In the late 1960’s I arranged and wrote out all of this very old music score for the JSHS Band originally composed by W S Ripley and arranged by Harry J. Lincoln. My Father, when he became the JSHS Band Director in 1931 continued the tradition of the Band playing the music, “We Honor the Brave” on entrance to the Cemetery. The Band usually paraded from East Broad Street up Allegheny Street to the Cemetery. The Band would go to the Valley and to Salladasburg and play on Memorial Day as well.”
“My Father was the band director of the Jersey Shore High School Band for 35 years so the same Schoendorfer tradition was continued for many years. I Frank Moyer Schoendorfer was the JSHS Band mascot at age 3, so wore the same uniform as everyone else. Those old uniforms were worn by my three sons at Memorial Day in 1963 as they paraded with the Band, thus modeling these uniforms. Dean wore the original sweater uniform, David wore the cape that was added for warmth and Frank wore the orange and black military styled uniform later worn by the Junior High Band. My daughter Lori wore that years Drum Majorette uniform. Those uniforms are on display in the Jersey Shore Historial Society Building, Moss House, on Main Street in JS.
My Father, Frank Ludwig Schoendorfer (1902-1968) was awarded the National American Legion Award in 1964 for his development, years of participation and Superior leadership and organizational ability of the Jersey Shore Memorial Day Annual Performances over the many years. This is a very prestigious award, and I’m sure he was proud to receive it, particularly in front of his wife, son, daughter-in-law, Grand sons and Grand daughter.
I made the Memorial Day address at the JS Cememtery in 1983, in military uniform as I was the Dean of Admissions at the Valley Forge Military Academy at the time. That same year the JS Mayor George Teufel presented a proclamation “In Tribute to the Frank L. Schoendorfer Family” Whereas the Frank L. Schoendorfer Family, beginning with Grandfather Frank Schoendorfer, Father, Frank L. Schoendorfer, Son Frank M. Schoendorfer and Grandsons have given not only Jersey Shore on Memorial Day but in the service of this great Country for over a period of over eighty years.
I reorganized the JS Town Band in 1994 and ever since, this Band has augmented the JSHS Band in playing at the JS Cemetery on Memorial Day. I conducted most of the programs when we started that tradition. Last year, 2015, I directed only the Uplifter March. This is one of the marches composed by my Father. Also for the last two years Grandmom Joyce, Being a DAR member of the Fort Antes Chapter (the JS DAR Chapter Name), laid the wreath during the Program for those Revolutionary Soldiers that died in battle in our American Revolution. Also in attendance last year was Lori Schoendorfer Dorsz, her husband, Ted and son, Ted II and his friend.
For the last several years I played with the Fairplay Brass over in the JS Valley for their Memorial Day Programs the Sunday before Memorial Day. This year, 2016, I will play with the Fairplay Brass again and also conduct my Fathers, Uplifter March and play cornet for the JS Memorial Day program. Surprise, I did this! Played over in the Valley with the Brass Grandmom Joyce sat with her cousins, Jim and Karen Myers.
Memorial Day 2016 included a surprise award, that I had no idea that was taking place. They call me forward to receive a plaque for all the years that I directed the combined JS Town Band and the JS High School Band. The inscription read, “Presented to Director Emeritus Frank Schoendorfer, LTC [RET] United States Army. In appreciation for your outstanding service and dedication to the Jersey Shore Town Band by The Jersey Shore Area Veterans Council, Inc.”

Our cousin Frank M Schoendorfer sent me an autographed book called "Images of America JERSEY SHORE" written by his lifelong friend Wayne Welshans. Frank introduced me to Wayne one day over lunch in Jersey Shore this summer. Wayne gave me some of the photos that I have posed in this group.

Jersey shore is where Karl Herman Mosch's daughter, Anna Mosch and her husband Frank Schoendorfer settled and raised their family.
Frank was born in Austria in 1867,
studied at the Vienna Music Conservatory,
and immigrated to the US in 1887.
In his early career he was baritone soloist for John Philip Sousa's band and in 1911 took charge of the New York Central Band in Avis. He made it one of the finest bands in the east.
He retired from the railroad in 1932 and became music instructor and assistant conductor of music at Mansfield and played with the Williamsport Symphony Orchestra.

Also in the photograph is my maternal grandfather, Egbert C McElroy, husband of Hertha Mosch. Anna Mosch was Hertha’s Aunt.
