A John Hershberger (1759-1847) served as a private in the Lancaster Co. Troops during the Revolutionary War. (From an article titled "Is Your Name--" obtained from E. Paul Weaver of Everett, PA. Mr. Weaver is a Brethren minister and forme missionary to Africa. His wife is a descendent of Jonathan Burkett who came ove from Switzerland From the same article: "Hershberger, an old and honored surname, is of German origin. According to authorities on the origin of names, it is of local meaning and was applied, when surnames came into vogue, to newcomers to communities who
came from Herschberg, a place in Germany. Herschberg is interpreted literally a "red deer mountain."
