Hatfield and McCoy Feud
October 23, 2022 · FB Group
Randolph “Ol' Ran'l” McCoy (1825- 1914) is considered by most to have been the patriarch of the feudin' McCoys of eastern Kentucky. Although he was once considered a loyal friend of Anderson (“Uncle Anse," or “Devil Anse”) Hatfield, most historians and feud enthusiasts say Ran'l grew into an angry and bitter man due to great tragedies associated with the Hatfield-McCoy Feud.
Was Ran'l a tortured soul, or did he ultimately discover a level of peace by the end of his days?
Well, it would have certainly been understandable for Ran’l and his wife, Sally, to have been hard-hearted and resentful due to the horrific killings, which included several of their children and kinfolk during the era.
On the other side of the Tug Fork of the Big Sandy River, Hatfields also suffered great losses through the same years, including the death of Uncle Jim Vance, Ellison Hatfield, Cotton Top Mounts, and later Troy and Elias Hatfield, and others.
No one won in this ugly battle between mountain clans, and both families suffered greatly for decades. The feud was a terrible thing, and it left its mark on the McCoys and Hatfields, and on their descendants for years to come.
On Feb. 18, 1890, Ellison "Cotton Top” Mounts was led to a plain wooden gallows in Pikeville, KY, for his involvements in the New Years Massacre of 1888. Many believe his public hanging unofficially closed the books on the Hatfield-McCoy feud.
Ran'l's beloved wife, Sarah “Sally” McCoy, died that same year, but from natural causes. Any sense of closure for the tortured McCoys must have been hard to find.
Yet, with the vendetta over, Ran'l McCoy became a ferry operator.
***
Certain documents now show that Ran'l McCoy, at the ripe ol' age of 73, continued on with some semblance of life. A widower, he remarried on July 29, 1899.
It was back in 2016 that Thomas Dotson, a friend of the Hatfield and McCoy Feud page, submitted these court documents to us along with a post, “[Ran’l’s] marriage at age 73 to 17-year-old Hattie Steffey probably lifted his spirits for a while … but, I imagine he was down in the dumps again in 1905, when Hattie divorced him, with Ran'l's son, Sam, appearing as a witness for Hattie against his papa."
It looks like life never got easy for Ol’ Ran’l.
Later on, the patriarch died from severe burns sustained during an accidental home fire in 1914. His body was buried at Dils Cemetery, in Pikeville, KY.
- The court documents were submitted by Thomas Dotson, author, historian, descendant of the McCoys and Hatfields, and a friend of this page.

He’s my Great Great Grandfather. I suspect he suffered from what today is known as PTSD. During the civil war, he was a POW in a reportedly horrendous prison. Stories exist that say he came back a different man. My thoughts on this anyway.
