OUR BONNETT FAMILY
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
by Leon & Dee Henricks, April 1997
First Generation
The earliest ancestor found to date is Daniel Bonnett, born about 1658. It is not known if he was married more than once but the Church Book of St Evangile in the Wallonne settlement of Freidrichstahl, Baden, Germany tend to indicate that he may have been. As his children were confirmed, married or died, some are noted as a child of Daniel Bonnett and others are referred to as a child of Daniel Bonnett and Christine Cousine. Daniel had a least seven children. Daniel Bonnett's wife Christine, died in February 1731 or 1732 and Daniel died 4 September 1736.

Anna Marie was the young widow of Jean Corbeau and the daughter of Abraham Desreux and Judith Guerit. Her father Abraham was referred to as (Ancien....meaning Senior or the older of the two Abraham Desreux, she also had a brother named Abraham
7. Jean Pierre Bonnett, born about 1705, married Cherie Catherine La Exire in May 1721.
In 1733 Jean Jacques Bonnett, his wife and four children left Germany. One hundred ninty passengers, (fifty eight Palatines, their wifes and children totaling 172) plus crewmen and Captain Edward Lee sailed from Rotterdam to America via Dover aboard the ship Eliza of London, and arrived in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in August. It is noted that all of the Palatines (the senior proprietor of a province in an American Colony) including Jean Jacques Bonnett were recleared and requalified at the courthouse before the Honorable Lt. Governor and several magistrates on 27 August 1733. It is not known how long he served in this position but it is believed that they lived in Paoli, Chester Co., Pennsylvania.

In 1766 Samuel Bonnett purchased 205 acres of land on Cedar Creek in Hardy Co.Virginia. In 1877 Samuel leased the land to David Myles. In 1784 Samuel is listed in the Hampshire Co., Virginia census. In 1786 Samuel purchased 400 acres in Monogalia Co., (later became Harrison Co.) Virginia. In the fall of 1789 a tree fell and killed him. With nine children still at

Martha, born in December 1773, the daughter of Jesse David Hughes, Sr. and Grace Tanner.
It is noted on Martha's grave marker that she was captured by Indians in December 1787 and released and returned in 1790. Don't you just know she was so mad they couldn't control her. That away Grandmother, we love your spunk!

Correspondence from the estate of Jacob Bonnett to the War Department regarding his suspended pension, lists the children of Jacob and Martha. Jesse and Jacob H. Bonnett are not listed. Other Bonnett researchers say they are the sons of Jacob and Martha. Perhaps it was easier to omit than to locate them.
Samuel Bonnett married Eliza Linger on 24 December 1818 in Lewis Co., Virginia (later became West Virginia). Eliza died 15 October 1819, five days after her son was born.
Child of Samuel Bonnett and Eliza Linger

Samuel Bonnett married Lucinda Fitzhugh Hooe (written as Lucy Moore) on 5 December 1820 in Lewis Co., Virginia. Lucinda was born 27 July 1800 in Virginia. Her parents are still unknown. Some Bonnett researchers believed Samuel died at a very young age, believe me he did not.

All of Samuel and Lucinda's children were born in Lewis Co., Virginia (later became West Virginia). In 1847 Samuel and Lucinda moved with their children (all but Martha Jane) to the Silver
Creek Township in Green Co., Ohio. In the fall of 1850 they moved to Marion Co., Iowa and in 1856 to Mahaska Co., Iowa. Samuel died in Mahaska Co. in November that same year. It appears he never had time to plant a crop in his newly purchased farm. Lucinda died in Mahaska Co. on 15 July 1881.
